2016 Dashe "Reserve" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel

SKU #1405062 Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark With a straightfoward varietal nose of mixed berries, cocoa and subtle oak and flavors to match, this firm, slightly dry-edged look at Zinfandel hits the right marks without hitting any with great intensity or flare. It gets a tad rough and unruly at the eleventh hour, but a year or two in the bottle should smooth off its ragged edges as will the tempering effects of food if it is poured in the shorter term. *One Star* Inner quote mark (1/2019)

K&L Notes

The vintage of 2016 featured ideal ripening conditions in the Dry Creek Valley which were warm but not excessively hot. They harvested the grapes in mid-to-late-September and hand-sorted the grapes on arrival at the winery to remove leaves or less-than-perfect grapes. Using a small, gentle de-stemmer, they carefully removed the stems and kept a proportion of the grapes as whole berries to increase the wine’s natural fruitiness. The wine was fermented using only the natural yeast population on the grapes and the resulting wine shows off the terroir of the vineyards beautifully. Winery note: "Blackberry, black currant, hints of plum, cherry, and chocolate, with an underlying floral component of violets. Sweet blackberry and cassis, pomegranate, plum, hints of chocolate and licorice. One of the most intense and complex Dry Creek Zinfandels we’ve made, with dark chocolate and black pepper spice underlying the velvety, intense mid-palate and the balanced, sweet red-fruit finish."

Zinfandel is often overlooked as a serious option when shopping for a food friendly wine. Frequently relegated to two distinct categories (White zin & insanely high alcohol fruit bombs), Zin is regularly overshadowed by Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Sauvignons; but "California's Grape" has a great deal to offer savvy, value-minded customers. The Dashe, "Reserve Dry Creek Valley," Zinfandel is a perfect example of the variety. A classic Dry Creek Zin with a complex spectrum of flavors, balancing pure fruit and bright acidity. The husband & wife team at Dashe strive to make terroir-driven wines with minimal intervention. Aromas of dark brambly fruit abound, along with subtle cocoa and floral notes. The palate is alive with dark chocolate and black pepper spice underlying the velvety, intense midpalate. Finishing with a balanced, sweet red-fruit note this is definitely one of my go-to wines when manning the grill!
