2014 Ladera Howell Mountain Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1403078 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This reserve-level wine offers impressive extraction and concentration within a full-bodied, complex package of tobacco and sage. The fruit is classically mountain-grown in its intensity, black and liqueur-like, with touches of coconut and dark chocolate. (VB) Inner quote mark (9/2018)

93 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Pat and Anne Stotesbury purchased Chateau Woltner on Howell Mountain in 2000 and converted the vineyards from chardonnay to cabernet sauvignon. The volcanic hillside, 82 acres rising from 1,600 to 1,800 feet, is next door to the CADE estate, owned by Gordon Getty’s Plumpjack Group. It has consistently produced exceptional cabernet, and when the Stotesburys considered selling, Plumpjack made an offer for the land in 2016. Meanwhile, Ladera will continue to produce wines going forward, and Jade Barrett will stay on as the winemaker and the Stotesburys plan to contract for grapes from this site. Their 2014 has black spice and floral notes, the warm-cool of a west-facing hillside at altitude. Its mountain-grown depth of fruit digs down into earthy tannins, the wine substantial but remarkably accessible for a young Howell Mountain cabernet. That accessibility, however, belies a taut structure that will sustain this in the cellar for a decade or more. Inner quote mark (10/2018)
