2017 Roger Sabon "Prestige" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1402383 96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Compelling stuff, even tasted next to the Le Secret, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Prestige is 70% Grenache and 20% Syrah, with a smattering of other varieties. Raspberry and garrigue notes lead the way, followed by a full-bodied wine that's incredibly rich and velvety in texture. There's the suggestion of chocolate fudge, but somehow it remains bright and balanced, framed by firm tannins. (JC) (8/2018)

The same blend as the 2016, the 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Prestige is another inky colored wine from this estate that has an elegant, mineral-laced, balanced profile that’s very much in the style of the 2017 vintage. Blackberries, raspberries, crushed rocks, ground pepper, and violet notes all give way to a full-bodied 2017 that has terrific purity, no hard edges, building tannin, and a great finish. It's going to hit the ground running and cruise in good cellars for two decades. It has slightly more freshness and minerality than the Reserve cuvée. (8/2018)

Grown across a variety of soils in lieux-dits Les Brusquières and Cabrières, the fruit is fermented half in stainless steel and half in concrete, then aged in foudre, tronconic wooden vats and 10% demi-muid. The result is a wine with a nose of dark chocolate, smoky tea and herbs, leading to a very full-bodied palate that's generous in fruit but also has great purity. The weight of fruit hides the mass of grippy, ripe tannins, and it's very well balanced. With very persistent fruit, this is a superb expression of Châteauneuf. Drinking Window 2021 - 2030. Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
