1996 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru

SKU #140233 94-97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark This blockbuster wine possesses a profound nose. It exhibits awesomely ripe red and black fruits, raw meat, and Asian spices, all of which are encased in sweet toasty oak. This full-bodied, wide, thick, focused, harmonious, and intense wine releases amazingly powerful layers of candied black cherries and blackberries. It is structured, totally precise, pure, and possesses an exceptionally long finish loaded with abundant sweet tannins. It will require patience. (PR) Inner quote mark (8/1998)

96 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Deep color. Very pure fruit confit aromas of cassis and blackberry. A rich La Tâche, with a combination of ripeness and high acidity. It's up front in its appeal today, with a great nose and tight finish.--La Tâche non-blind vertical. (BS) Inner quote mark (6/2006)

95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark Fantastically pure with the classic spice box, hoisin and soy nose followed by big, rich, very structured flavors that display notes of earth, leather and tea. The tannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap with length that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary in character and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. A fine, if not genuinely great, vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth than the '96 Grands Ech... Very classy juice. Inner quote mark (12/2016)

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Brilliant ruby-red. Ineffable liqueur-like perfume combines blackberry, black raspberry, cassis, truffle and tar. Fat, sweet and dense but quite closed in the mouth; not yet showing La Tache's typical licorice component. But a complete wine with superb structure and a very, very long and subtle aftertaste that builds slowly and saturates the olfactories. 95+ Inner quote mark (4/1999)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Surprisingly, looks more mature than the Échézeaux, at the rim and is even a bit paler. Heady bouquet of violets and game ('nothing is perfect but the bouquet is really very interesting', says Aubert with dramatic understatement) - the start of real complexity and absolutely gorgeous on the palate. So opulent and rich and layered and throat warming. Jewel bright fruit, though the tannins are definitely still present. Very long and layered. Really dances on the palate! Still a little tight. 19/20 Inner quote mark (2/2008)

K&L Notes

98 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "A deep ruby colour with very little ageing. There is a tangible stalkiness on the nose that seems to dissipate with a few swirls of the glass. The nose is reticent at first, dark cherries, blackberry leaf, a touch of dried blood and cooked meats with blueberries and violets evolving after twenty minutes in the glass. The palate has beautiful poise, firm tannins and moving towards secondary flavours: sour cherry, dried orange peel, and a ferrous finish. I feel this La Tache is undergoing its adolescence, an “awkwardness” that will resolve itself five or six years hence. “A moody git” are the last three words I scribbled as I vainly tried to extract it out of its sulk, but I give up. Just cellar it because it will deliver! Tasted February 2008."
