2016 Château de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhône

SKU #1402276 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The silky 2016 Côtes du Rhône is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise. Cherries, garrigue and leather notes all come together in this medium to full-bodied but gentle, elegant wine. It's smooth from start to finish, with fine-grained tannins and hints of thyme that emerge on the finish. (JC) (11/2018)

Wine Spectator

Gently mulled cherry and plum fruit glides through, with hints of warm fruitcake and melted red licorice. Offers a fruit-filled, modestly juicy finish. Drink now. (JM) (11/2018)

K&L Notes

Just across the Rhône river from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this 88-acre estate is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. Montfaucon crafts their Côtes du Rhône to express the intense fruit characteristics of the appellation, blending to achieve harmony and balance.

This wine is hitting so far above its price point it is not even funny. Blueberry, plum, licorice and spice on the nose. Rich yet fresh on the palate. Great tannins (my main concern for low-price CDRs) and beautiful balance. I would recommend buying a case in any year, but this is 2016. Buy two.

This is one of the best Cotes-du-Rhone values we offer and the 2016 is stunning. It has the stuffing of a pricier wine along with the depth of the vintage while retaining balance and freshness. I especially love the wonderful red fruits and exotic spicing of this perennial favorite.

Generosity is an endearing trait often reserved in the best of times for our own species, but it can also be found in other realms. Take a humble wine, for instance, especially if it shows such supple red and black fruit, gentle spice and melded warmth of character as this Cotes du Rhone from Chateau de Montfaucon. Having spent some time with the estate's utterly engaging owner and overall bon vivant Rudi de Pins one can't but feel that all of his wines share the same convivial personality and lusty exuberance for life. Pour this generous wine for your friends, your family, yourself.

What a WINE! The little Côtes du Rhône is anything but little. A beautifully balanced fruit bouquet and spice is classic and elegant. The tannins are big, robust and ripe showing that this wine will even hold up for about a decade in keeping a true style. I would put this up against some Châteauneuf du Papes just to show what a good Côtes du Rhône can do. This is a serious wine! Bottoms up!

My love for the wines of the Cotes-du-Rhone began in earnest with the release of the 1998 vintage. I socked several cases away assuming I’d be rewarded in years to come. And as my stocks dwindle I can attest that I was greatly rewarded and that many of them are still going strong. While this may not be a 20 year wine, I am positive that it will provide glorious drinking over the next decade. I’m a fan of the stylish elegance Montafaucon summons forth. The combination of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and Counois yields a wine of amazing complexity that keeps you coming back for the next sip as each one reveals an additional nuance or layer within the wine. Our esteemed Rhone buyer, Keith Mabry, has a nose for ferreting out the best of the vintage and he really nailed this one. I strongly urge you to put a case in your pantry for near and long term drinking.

The new 2016 is a stellar new release from our favorite Lirac based producer. Offering up richer flavors of blackcurrants, blackberries and Indian spices, this is a gorgeous effort that lingers on the palate. The volume of the 2016 vintage shines through but the deft hand of winemaker Rudi de Pins keeps it all elegant and refined on the palate. Having recently tasted the 2012, which showed spectacularly well, with even more concentration this has great potential ahead of it.

Our best selling "small producer" Rhone red is a shade richer and more substantial than in past vintages but retains all the lively dark fruit and crunchy berry flavors we expect from this bottling. Blackberries, potpourri, savory herb, licorice and an assortment of exotic spices fill the aromas and flavors of this amazing bargain.
