2010 Trabucchi Amarone della Valpolicella

SKU #1402250

Trabucchi has always been among our favorite producers of Amarone, for their flavor, character, and fun. Over the entrance to the winery is inscribed, "With inspiration from Giuseppe Quintarelli, help from Romano Dal Forno and the money of Sig. Trabucchi," who is obviously someone with a great sense of humor. Valpolicella is one of the most exciting winemaking zones in Italy now. Gone are the days of the ubiquitous plonk; cheap and wet. Today's Valpolicella is stunningly aromatic, concentrated, richly textured, and spicy. The Trabucchi Amarone has less fruity ripeness and a fresher, more vinous quality. This bears more of a resemblance to Barolo than Amarone. From the winery: "Intense ruby red in colour with fine garnet at the rim. The nose is explosive with pleasant and intense aromas of chocolate, graphite, prune, chlorophyll and black truffle, followed by coffee, black pepper, nutmeg, bay leaves and rosemary. The finale is aromatic and persistent, finishing with black truffle, prune and morello cherry."

This is an exceptionally intriguing example of Amarone. The nose is profoundly savory and I was immediately hooked by a distinctive scent of salted capers. While some Amarone wines can been cloying and potent this is instead a drier representation, showing ripe fruit, even a bit of brine on the palate and superbly bright acidity. It's savory and fruity so try this as a pairing with duck or game instead of beef. Favoloso!
