2015 Next of Kyn (Sine Qua Non) "Cumulus Vineyard No. 9'' Central Coast Red Blend (1.5L)

SKU #1401045 99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Deep garnet-purple, the nose unabashedly struts its stuff, giving up flamboyant plum preserves, blackberry compote, Black Forest cake and star anise notes with hints of Sichuan pepper, forest floor, lavender, lilacs, Ceylon tea and smoked meats. Big, concentrated and full-bodied, this rockstar is a powerhouse of energy, supported by a rock solid, firm and super plush tannins and finely knit freshness, finishing very long. Tantalizingly delicious now, patience will be rewarded here. (LPB) Inner quote mark (6/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2015 No. 9 Cumulus Vineyard is off the charts gorgeous, just as it was from barrel last year. Tasted from bottle, the 2009 is a bit closed, but all the aromatic depth, soaring intensity and energy that it showed from barrel is there. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s sensational pedigree. Dark cherry jam, mocha, grilled herbs and leather are some of the many notes that develop with time, but it is the wine’s overall structure that truly elevates into the realm of the divine. Outer quote mark The 2015 No 9 Cumulus Vineyard continues to show brilliantly, with the more tight, focused, tannic style of the vintage. It doesn’t have the upfront sexiness of the 2016, but it’s incredibly balanced, deep, long, and complex. I loved it last year and wrote that it’s going to flirt with perfection in another handful of years, and I stand by those words. 98+ Inner quote mark (10/2019)

K&L Notes

97 points, William Kelley in Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Cumulus Vineyard #9 is very impressive, offering up a brooding bouquet of cassis, blackberries, charcoal and smoky plums. On the palate, it's full-bodied, richly structured and velvety, with an ample, mouth-filling mid-palate, chewy but fine-grained tannins and a deep, concentrated core of fruit. While it's a powerful, dramatic wine it's also quite reserved—like Sine Qua Non's 2015s. Krankl notes that since 2014, the blend has begun to reflect his original vision for the vineyard more closely than the earlier, Syrah-dominated releases: this year's is 45% Syrah, 22% Grenache, 16.8% Mourvèdre, 5% Touriga Nacional and 1.2% Viognier. It saw 34 months in wood, 40% of which was new." (08/2018)
