2008 Bollinger "Grande Année" Brut Champagne

SKU #1400366 99 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2008 La Grande Année is another brilliant 2008 that delivers the goods. Straight-up awesome notes of stone fruits, white flowers, honeysuckle, and an incredible, liquid rock-like minerality all emerge from the glass, and it develops more nuance, spice, toasted bread, and an almost Alsatian Riesling-like petrol character over the course of the evening. It’s a full-bodied, rich, powerful Champagne, yet like the top 2008s, it has brilliant precision, purity, and focus. It’s unquestionably one of the finest versions of this cuvée ever produced, although it needs another 4-5 years of bottle age to hit prime time. It should keep for 3-4 decades. Bravo! Outer quote mark In 2008, the remarkable maturity of the grapes combined with an amazing acidity has produced a vintage of great balance, concentration and depth. The wine was aged for nine years on its lees, then for another year following disgorgement. Bright straw in colour with pinprick bubbles, it blooms on the nose with a fresh lemon leaf aroma, a sniff of strawberry and white chocolate and a candied peanut toastiness in depth. On the palate it’s silky, broad and lingering, showing a kind of bittersweet fruit profile with grapefruit and peach kernel notes, and an amazing chalky, mineral finish. It will keep well. Wait to drink it if in magnum or bigger. Drinking Window 2020 - 2045. (AF) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

Outer quote mark Bollinger's 2008 La Grande Année is superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of crisp orchard fruit, ripe lemons, honeycomb, warm biscuits, dried white flowers and a delicate top note of walnuts and fino sherry. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a beautifully refined mousse, superb concentration at the tightly wound core, incisive acids and a supremely elegant intermingling of Bollinger's oxidative stylistic signatures with fresh, vibrant fruit. The finish is long, precise and chalky. This is a Grande Année built for the cellar - the real excitement will come with a bit more bottle age - but this is already a thrilling Champagne in the making. Finished with eight grams per liter dosage, it was disgorged by hand in July 2018. This is also the first vintage of Grande Année to be bottled in Bollinger's new narrower-necked 1846 bottle, which should make for a slower evolving wine. (WK) 97+ Inner quote mark (3/2019)

97 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Bollinger's 2008 Grande Année is rich, ample and full-bodied, with all of the pedigree of the vintage on display. Dried pear, dried flowers, chamomile, red plum and mint develop as the 2008 shows the breadth and creaminess that are such signatures of the Bollinger house style. A whole range of brighter, more floral and chalky notes appear later, adding translucence and energy. The 2008 is 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay taken across 18 crus, and it is the Pinot that very much informs the wine in both flavor and texture. More importantly, the 2008 is one of the best Grande Années I can remember tasting. Bollinger fans won't want to miss it. Disgorged November 2018. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. Outer quote mark Enticing hints of toasted cumin, ground anise and graphite waft from the glass of this harmonious, mouthwatering version, accenting the finely meshed flavors of crushed black currant, poached apricot, grilled nut and lemon curd. The texture shows a lovely viscosity, extending the flavor range, which expands on the lasting finish. Disgorged June 2018. Drink now through 2033. (AN) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

Outer quote mark A wonderfully elegant, pure and airy nose is beautifully layered with its pretty array of green apple, pear, white flower, rose petal, yeast and plenty of citrus elements. The elegance continues on the racy and intense flavors that are supported by a very fine mousse that imparts a lilting mouth feel to the notably dry, crisp and strikingly complex finale. This is an absolute knockout and a wine that should age for a very long time but because the complexity is so impressive, it could actually be enjoyed now. Even so, I will stash my bottles away for at least another 4 to 5 years. Drink: 2023+ Inner quote mark (10/2019)

Outer quote mark This is the producer’s equivalent of a Vintage Champagne. Fermented and aged in wood and then kept for nine years before release, this wine comes from an exceptional vintage that manages to combine ripe fruit and acidity, meaning the wine can age extraordinarily well. Although the wine is just ready, it will be much better from 2022 and for many years after. (RV) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

K&L Notes

The 2008 Bollinger is the most anticipated Champagne release of 2019. This vintage, which many critics and producers alike are calling the best in a generation, has a lot in common with the great 1996. Back then, they had never seen grapes that were so ripe yet so high in acid. When 2008 came with the same conditions, they were ready with the wine making experience to get the best out the extraordinary ingredients. The 2008 Bollinger is made entirely from estate grown fruit and composed of 71% Pinot Noir and 29% Chardonnay. It is 100% barrel fermented in used barrels to avoid imparting oak tannin to the wine. In 2008, Bollinger used 18 of their best crus in the wine, 84% Grand Cru and 16% Premier Cru. The combination of fully ripe Pinot Noir from steep south-facing slopes in Ay, barrel fermentation, and the incredible lengthening acidy of this monumental vintage, has produced something special by any standard. After 9 years aging on the lees, this could be enjoyed now, or if you prefer, cellared for generations.

I have yet to be disappointed by Bollinger, but this release is especially spectacular. Powerful and luxurious, the 2008 Grande Année mirrors Bollinger’s Pinot-driven house style but adds a layer of racy complexity thanks to the colder (and highly anticipated) 2008 vintage. On the nose, white floral notes mingle with honeycomb, while pear fruit shines through the lush palate. There’s a distinctive berry note, too, thanks to the 71% Pinot Noir, while the 29% Chardonnay feels electric. Delicate bubbles provide finesse that balances the heady palate and vivid acid. This is all estate fruit, aged for nearly 10 years on the lees, the bottles are hand-riddled… wow. The quality and care that goes into this Champagne – especially for the price – is exceptional.

Wow! I mean, wow! It's not often we get to taste these gems before they hit the market but this is something truly special. Great vintage from one of my favorite producers and it fires on all cylinders. Complex nose, full palate, long finish - it's all here and should offer decades of enjoyment. Wow Indeed!
