2015 Garage Wine Company "Truquilemu" Carignan Maule Valley

SKU #1400089 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2015 Truquilemu Vineyard reveals the wild and somewhat rustic character of the Carignan—a little earthy, with a touch of smoked meat. It's very tasty and has the granite texture on the palate. This year they started using some stems in the vinification, an innovation that continued in 2016. 5,230 bottles were filled in November 2016, as they always like to age their single-vineyard reds for two winters before they are bottled. K&L Notes

Derek Mossman is up to some truly interesting things on the Chilean wine scene. Whether it's dry farmed Maule Pais, old vine Cinsault, Maipo Cabernet, or this singular Carignan, the man is making very interesting wines and raising the qualitative bar, focusing on terroir and maximum fruit expression. By identifying some of Chile's most interesting vineyards and working very minimally in the cellar to allow the fruit to shine, Garage Wine Company is producing some great examples of authentic vino chileno.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Carignane

- This red grape goes by many names, including Carignane, Carignano, Cariñena, Mazuelo, Moestal, Roussillonen and Samsó, which can make things confusing. A native of northern Spain's Cariñena DO, this grape is also found all over France, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon, and is also planted in substantial amounts in Italy and California. A bold, spicy, tannic grape, you'll frequently find Carignan blended with softer, fruitier varieties like Grenache.
Country:

Chile

- Located on the western coast of South America and bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes to the East, the Chilean wine-growing climate is similar to that of California's Napa Valley and Bordeaux. The Chilean wine industry is known for being consistently free of phylloxera, but political and economic unrest has brought its own source of disorder. The recent establishment of a free market has resuscitated the wine industry, and significant investments have been made, switching the economic focus from domestic production to exports. Chile produces roughly a quarter of the wine Argentina produces, and is known for single-varietal exports, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay. It's a popular region in the U.S. known for inexpensive and tasty wine.
