2017 Alpha Estate Malagouzia Amyndeon Greece

SKU #1399924 92 points Wine & Spirits

This malagousia reflects the cool climate it grows in, a high plain in northwest Greece. It’s tight and bright, with a saline minerality that acts like a spark, lighting up the citrusy fruit and floral herbs. Long, lean and light, it’s a refreshing, elegant aperitif. (8/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Scented with a mix of peach and lightly exotic fruit and flowers but not excessive thanks to a citrus freshness in tandem, even a slight mineral/stony note. There's texture from the skin contact and the lees ageing that gives a fulness in the mouth but it is still light on its feet and very fresh. This is a variety that is difficult to get right but here there is intensity without excess weight and a long pure finish. 16.5/20 points. (JH) (3/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Malagouzia Turtles Vineyard is unoaked and comes in at 13.2% alcohol. As with most of the better versions of this grape, it is fun just to smell. It could, perhaps, use a little more intensity, but the purity of fruit is impressive, and the concentration is reasonable for the grape. Particularly enjoyable are the dry, controlled bursts of pear and peach mingling together on the finish. I wouldn't say this is their best-ever version, but it is still a hard-to-resist, refreshing white at a nice price. As always, drink it young and fresh for best results. It will be great this summer. - We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines.
