2015 Tether Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1399539 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Made by the talented Anna Monticelli, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is a smoking value that competes with wines that run 2-3 times its price. Deep, layered notes of cassis, toasted spices, graphite, and obvious minerality emerge from this medium to full-bodied, ripe, sexy, yet perfectly balanced Napa Valley Cabernet that’s drinking beautifully today. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Malbec, aged 20 months in 50% new French oak, it over-delivers and will keep for 10-15 years. Outer quote mark The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot and 1% Malbec aged in 50% new French oak, with fruit from St. Helena (45%), Oakville (35%) and Oak Knoll (20%). Deep garnet-purple colored, it sings of crushed blackcurrants, black berries and warm plums with touches of cigar box, bay leaves, new leather and cast iron pan. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm and grainy with great freshness and layer upon layer of intense black fruits, finishing with a compelling herbal lift. (LPB) Inner quote mark (11/2018)

Cathy Corison (Corison winery) might be the undisputed queen of winemaking in the Napa Valley. But right on her heels I believe is Anna Monticelli, who has quickly made a name for herself. Anna, also the winemaker for Pina cellars in Napa Valley, started a side project that utilizes grapes from some of the most premier vineyard sites in Napa Valley, Howell Mountain, and St Helena. What she found was lightning in a bottle. By far this one of the best under $50 Napa Cabs that I’ve come across. Notes of black currant, peppercorn, leather, black fruit and tobacco emanate from the glass. The palate is amazingly mouth filling with broad, long grain tannins laced with volcanic minerality. Outstanding!
