2013 Trimbach Clos Ste Hune Riesling Alsace

SKU #1399247 97 points James Suckling

This is very dense and powerful. Full-bodied and tight. Gives away very little at first but then opens to a full palate with incredible finish and length. Fabulous. (9/2015)

The 2013 vintage of Clos Ste. Hune is one of the finest young vintages of this great wine that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. As the US importer was out of sample bottles of this wine, Jean Trimbach very kindly intervened and arranged for a sample magnum to be sent, which made some of my friends very happy when I shared it with them! The wine is nicely cool in profile in 2013, coming in at 12.5% octane and offering up beautiful precision in its youthful bouquet of pink grapefruit, tart orange, a touch of petrol, a beautiful base of limestone minerality, discreet floral tones and a topnote of citrus peel. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied and very, very deep at the core, with beautiful transparency and lift, snappy acids and great length and grip on the focused and complex finish. A great, classic vintage of Clos Ste. Hune. (6/2018)

As readers know Trimbach's iconic Clos Sainte Hune comes from a 1.67 hectare plot on the Grand Cru Rosacker but is sold as Clos Ste Hune since 1919. The densely planted vines are pretty old (more than 50 years on average), with the oldest planted in the 1940s and the youngest in the 1980s. Bottled, like all the prestigious wines of Trimbach in April 2014, the 2013 Riesling Clos Ste Hune shows a very clear and deep, dusty/smoky, mineral nose which impressively reflects the Muschelkalk terroir. Rich, precise and pure also on the nobly textured and highly elegant palate this expressive and full-bodied Riesling is penetrating mineral and piquant but also very juicy. The finish is extremely long and complex. Very promising and stunningly accessible already. However, this wine won't be in the market before 2019/20. (SR) (10/2015)

Golden-tinged yellow. Almond paste, beurre blanc, lemon curd, sweet spices, coconut and toast, complicated by a hint of petrol. Bright and acid, offering lively flavors similar to the aromas. A hint of noble rot is typical of the vintage, as it was in 1998. This is very complex, especially on the nose, and boasts a delightful acid-fruit balance. Finishes with hints of coriander and mint and a really pentrating acid cut. (ID) 94+ (1/2019)
