K&L Notes

A stunning find, this confusingly named brandy is actually a 21-year-old apple brandy distilled from 100% California-grown apples and made by a famous California brandy family. The new eaux-de-vie was placed into seasoned French oak casks and laid to rest with no real intention. It was never bottled or brought to market in any way...until now! Arkansas Applejack purchased this lot of 20 barrels, blended, proofed and bottled it into the oldest ever California apple brandy to hit the market. Truly stunning, this is a piece of brandy history that will never be repeated.

We've got somewhat of an orchard stroll here in which I pick up on a medley of red, yellow, and green apples. We've got fragrant scents of gentle oak spice, cedar, and old polished wood. We've got soft baking spice aromas, vanilla, slight smells of fresh lemon, and a touch of salinity. This is exceptionally elegant brandy. Flavors of green apple hard candies and salty caramel chews combine on the palate giving me the impression of the Caramel Apple Pop suckers that I used to get in my trick-or-treat bag on Halloween (Fine. Yes, I still go trick-or-treating. Don't judge), but there's nearly no sugar sweetness here. The French oak bobs in and out of the palate's foreground, playful yet restrained. As the palate moves to its close, the flavors focus in on a combination of juicy Golden Delicious and tart Granny Smith apple flavors. The finish manages to be quite fruity and dry at the same time, and it definitely has me craving another glass.

The aromatics of this applejack are off-the-charts-fantastic. I want to put it into a dropper and use it as cologne. The French oak influence is incredibly elegant, wafting the crisp, concentrated, lively apple vapors into every corner of the sinuses, settling behind the cheekbones in truly enticing fashion. The palate is refined and subtle -- more like a fine Calvados than any applejack I've come across. The fruit is not over-powering, and the finish adds some bitter apple skin to contrast the tangy fruit in the nose.

If you are a lover of apple distillate, you must add this bottle to your collection. It is a singular example of apple brandy and will certainly never come again at this price. If you set out to make this today, by the time you could bring it to market, the costs would have added up so quickly that you'd have no hope of selling the bottle for a reasonable sum. The juice is mellow and soft, yet amazingly fresh and lively. Golden apples abound. There is a creamy vanilla imparted by over two decades of wood aging that perfectly meld with the gentle spice of the used wood. If this had gone into new barrels it would be impossible to drink after this much time, but the well seasoned casks impart just enough structure and flavor to beautifully balance the eaux-de-vie. If you've ever enjoyed sipping a glass of Camut Calvados, you'd be remiss to not add this to your shelf.
