2016 Domaine Lafage "Bastide Miraflors" Côtes du Roussillon

SKU #1398942 94 points Jeb Dunnuck

A wine that almost always over-delivers, the 2016 Côtes du Roussillon Bastide Miraflors is, I suspect, the finest vintage for this cuvée to date (it’s in the same league as the off-the-charts 2015). A blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache from Lesquerde and Saint Martin de Fenouillet (both in the northern part of the Roussillon), aged all in older barrels and concrete tanks, it boasts rockstar notes of ripe blackberry fruits, spice, dried garrigue, and hints of chocolate. Possessing a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and sensational purity, it’s another one of those values that almost seems too good to be true. Drink it any time over the coming 3-4 years. (11/2018)

K&L Notes

Jean-Marc Lafage has knocked it out of the park once again with this high-quality, low-cost stunner of a wine. Domaine Lafage is housed in their facility just outside the city of Perpignan. One of the most advanced wineries in the region, Jean-Marc and his wife Elaine are crafting "must buy" wines from the region of Roussillon. The Bastide Miraflors is a blend of Syrah and old-vine Grenache. The vineyards for this wine are practicing organic with an average vine age of 55 years. The last three years, this has been one of our ten best sellers of the year. We expect no less again.

My first exposure to the Bastide Miraflors was last year with the 2015 vintage and I was floored at how so much wine could cost so little. I immediately stocked up and it became my house red. I tasted the 2016 vintage last night with Korean BBQ and I still say that this is one of the greatest wine values I have ever tasted. Ripe dark fruits, garrigue, spice, earth - they're all there, all in perfect balance With silky tannins as well. Absolutely delicious. Buy this by the case! It's that good!
Top Value!

Everyone's favorite every day red from the Roussillon is back (in pog form) and just as easy drinking and easily accessible as ever! However, I think I find myself enjoying it even more this time around. The acid is very balanced, and the tannins are never over bearing. The Bastide has very nice dark cherries notes, with subtle hint of cedar and chocolate. Having a BBQ soon? Have some bastide to go with it. You're gonna want to have ribs with this one.

It might sound a bit hyperbolic to say but Jean-Marc Lafage is one of the best winemakers in the world. I can think of no one else who consistently delivers the cost to quality ratio that he does. From the Tesssellae, to the Saint-Roch wines, to this Bastide Miraflors, no foot goes out of place in the dance this winemaker does. Once again (and again and again), the Bastide Miraflors is one of those wines that must be tasted to be believed. This 2016 has a gorgeous nose, saturated with black and purple fruits erupting from the glass surrounded by elegant aromas of white pepper, lead pencil and cigar tobacco. On the palate, the acid, tannins and fruit are in a harmonious balance. How does he do it? First, it is access to this gorgeous fruit and second, his unerring eye for detail and that is what brings it all together. The 2016 is certainly a wine that will drink for several years to come, it is without a doubt an amazing glass now. As to top-winemaker status? I don't think there's any hyperbole - Jean-Marc is one of the best winemakers in the world.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
