2015 Aaron "Citizen" Paso Robles Red Blend

SKU #1398710 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 2015 Citizen checks in as 57% Syrah and 43% Petite Sirah that spent 22 months in 65% new French oak (mostly larger barrels). It has a sweet nose of jammy blackberries, incense, and ground pepper that gives way to a rich, plush, seamless red that has sweet tannin, a rounded, voluptuous texture and a great finish. It’s another awesome wine from winemaker Aaron Jackson. (11/2018)

95 points Vinous

Vivid purple. Powerful, mineral-accented blackberry, blueberry and floral oil aromas are complemented by cola, licorice and woodsmoke flourishes. Sweet and impressively concentrated, offering palate-staining dark berry, cherry liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors enlivened by a jolt of zesty minerality. Rich yet energetic as well, finishing with outstanding clarity and harmonious tannins that build smoothly and steadily. (JR) (9/2018)

K&L Notes

Winery notes: "57% Syrah, 43% Petite Sirah. Citizen was born out of the desire to showcase both how complimentary and also how contrasting Petite Sirah and Syrah can be when blended together. Yes, the two varietals are genetically related (Petite Sirah is a cross of Syrah x Peloursin) and share some similar characteristics, yet they bring very different flavor profiles to a wine. Petite Sirah brings black pepper, rich dark fruit and a more forward, open structure, while Syrah brings mid palate, savory nuance, and lots of length. Citizen is usually one of our most savory wines, showcasing cracked pepper, olive tapenade, bay leaf, blue and black fruits, and a massive structure."

Bursting from the glass with blueberry pie, boysenberry and clove. Inky concentration, rich succulent fruit, scorched earth, ripe refined tannins. A powerful wine for sure but one that is beautifully put together and polished. Aaron Jackson is making some phenomenal wines down in Tin City and this is a real highlight of his range. Very reminiscent of some cult producers in the area...but at very reasonable price points...for now. This is one bandwagon you want to be on for sure.
