2016 Enclos Tourmaline, Pomerol

SKU #1398411 98 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2016 Château Enclos Tourmaline is a monster of a wine that comes from a tiny one-hectare parcel located just across the road from Clinet. The wine is 100% Merlot brought up all in new oak (it hit 14.5% natural alcohol). It’s a magical effort that offers a saturated purple color to go with notes of blueberries, blackberry liqueur, graphite, and crushed rocks. Still tight and compact on the palate, it has flawless integration of its fruit, tannins, and acidity, full-bodied richness, lots of ripe tannins, and a huge finish. This brilliant wine should be at its peak from 2024 to 2054. It’s worth pointing out that the vineyard manager and winemaker is the talented Jérôme Aguirre who gets consulting advice from Michel Rolland. Bravo to both individuals for this awesome wine. Outer quote mark This has very fresh, lively and attractive wet earth and hints of black truffle and violets. The palate has a very deep, plush and velvety texture with a very fresh and fluid tannin structure, carrying long and fresh. The tannins build on the palate. Blue fruit abounds here, full of pleasure and promise. Try from 2023. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Enclos Tourmaline was fermented entirely in 100% new 225-liter French oak barrels and it was aged for 20 months. Deep garnet-purple colored, it features baked plums, Black Forest cake and exotic spices with cigar box and menthol. The palate is medium to full-bodied, firm, grainy and fresh with great muscle in the mid-palate, finishing long and spicy. (LPB) 96+ Inner quote mark (11/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Enclos Tourmaline, from vines opposite the original winery at Clinet, has a pure, perfumed bouquet of black cherries, blueberry and truffle aromas that retain impressive delineation. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, very fine acidity and a surprisingly elegant, almost languorous finish that I find appealing. This is a superb Pomerol that will give 20 years of drinking pleasure. (NM) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

K&L Notes

93 points, Antonio Galloni in Vinous: "The 2016 Enclos Tourmaline has blossomed into a beautiful wine. Dark cherry jam, mocha and wild flowers all develop in this gorgeous, vibrant Pomerol. The interplay of fruit intensity, aromatic depth and energy makes for a captivating, arrestingly beautiful wine. Sensual and impeccable in its balance, Enclos Tourmaline is a winner in 2016. Enclos Tourmaline emerges from a single parcel that is part of Peter Kwok's La Patache estate." (1/2019)

This deep purple 100% Merlot from vineyards near Fleur Petrus and Clinet is thick and creamy with a middle of deep blue fruit and aromas of chiseled granite. The wine is substantial but effortless with the tannisn taking on an almost plush texture as they poke through all the glossy fruit. A modern monster just waiting to be uncoiled.
