2007 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre"

SKU #1396310 91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark Even with the hail shock to the vines, this is clearly phenolically ripe, in fact it's elegant, pure and classy with its usual white flower aromas that are nuanced by oyster shell and obvious minerality that continue onto the rich, full, concentrated and almost painfully intense flavors that explode like a vinous bomb on the balanced and gorgeously long finish. This sports grand cru weight and depth and should age well over the medium term. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding* Inner quote mark (10/2008)

Outer quote mark With four distinct hail storms on Montée de Tonnerre this year, I am sure that the yields in this vineyard were tiny, and despite the depredations, the example from Domaine William Fèvre is truly excellent. The crystalline bouquet offers up a vivid range of apple, grapefruit, tart oranges, apple blossoms and a complete smorgasbord of minerality that runs the gambit from wet stone to flint and chalk. On the palate the wine is medium-full, long, pure and very intensely flavored, with a rock solid core of fruit, a fine sense of reserve at the present time, and snappy acids and laser-like focus on the pure and tensile finish. A superb bottle of Montée de Tonnerre. Drink between 2014-2030. Inner quote mark (2/2009)

Outer quote mark (30 hectoliters per hectare, owing to hail) Pale color. Very pure aromas of lemon, mint and crushed stone. Intensely flavored, minerally and elegant; offers terrific cut and yet the overall impression is silky and seamless. This really spreads out on the very subtle aftertaste, with the wine's acidity extending the impression of minerality and citric perfume. The acidity here is a firm 4.8 grams per liter. 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The folks at Fevre call Vaulorent their “eighth grand cru,” a claim on which neither this vineyard’s location nor the quality of the ensuing wine cast any doubt. Indeed, it seems to me almost ludicrous – even commercially-speaking – to observe the tradition of labeling this wine with the name “Fourchaume,” an opinion I vociferously attempted to force on Fevre commercial director Stephane Follin-Arbelet! Fevre’s high-elevation parcels in Pied d’Aloue and adjacent Chapelot – which together inform their 2007 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre – were their worst-hit of all by hail, suffering 60% loss. What emerged, though, is very impressive. Deep, rich pineapple and peach fruit accented with brown spices, lily perfume, grapefruit zest, and crushed stone form a seamless, polished carpet of fruit and mineral that could not contrast more dramatically with the dynamic personality of this year’s Fourchaume. There is an almost doughy feel to the palate and a soothing length that will put you in reverie, and whose spell should not be broken for the next 6-8 years at least. (DS) Inner quote mark (12/2009)
