2016 Nikolaihof Grüner Veltliner Im Weingebirge Federspiel

SKU #1395025 91 points James Suckling

The quince nose of this wine is very different to any other grüner veltliner out there. This is also sleek and crisp with a seriously mineral finish. Drink or hold. (10/2017)

Scents and flavors of lentil and green bean are accented by weeds and green herbs. There is a hint of creaminess and an overall impression of softness here, doubtless in large part due to the influence of full malolactic transformation. But there is also a refreshing impression of cucumber-like juiciness as well as crunch, and at just 11.5% alcohol, the wine weighs in below the corresponding Hefeabzug, for delightful buoyancy. The finish features alkaline, stony and mouthwateringly saline notes as well as a hint of iodine, all similar to features found in this year’s Hefeabzug bottling. But here there is an enhanced sense of transparency and clarity. (DS) (12/2018)

A distinctive piquancy augments notes of clementine, elderflower and sage in this complex Federspiel. Firm structure and lively acidity link all the elements and drive this to a beautiful, herb-infused aftertaste. Drink now through 2025. 350 cases imported. (AZ) (11/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Federspiel shows clear, relatively intense and complex fruit on the nose. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for three months in large oak vats after a cellulose filtration, this is a light to medium-bodied, well-structured and elegant Grüner Veltliner with clear white fruit and a delicate phenolic structure that gives nice grip on the finish. This is kind of like a Muscadet from Austria: bone dry, a bit yeasty, well structured rather than fruit driven. (SR) (8/2017)

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Gruner Veltliner

- Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, making up about a third of all the vineyard land in the country, according to importer extraordinaire Terry Thiese. The varietal has definitely increased in popularity of the past few years, as sommeliers and wine directors loaded their lists with this spicy white because it pairs well with so many things. Its bouquet has been described as floral, tending to toward musky, with hints of peppery greens, lentils, citrus and red fruit with a distinctive mineral quality. In the mouth the wine can be broad or precise, but is almost always distinguished by bracing acidity and flavors that mirror the nose. A notoriously good ager, you can drink GrüVes in their youth, or let them evolve in complexity in your cellar.
Country:

Austria

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure.
