SKU #1391606 97 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Luxurious and layered, this nicely mature wine has a broad range of complex aromas and flavors, from fig to mushroom to butter and baking spices that ride a supple texture and linger for a long finish. The very fine bead, plush texture and a creamy richness that verges on sweetness are practically irresistible. Best through 2025. *Cellar Selection* (JG) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

Outer quote mark Extravagant, yet balanced and refined, with lush, crisp brioche, fresh ginger and spice, roasted hazelnut and Asian pear flavors that fan out on the lengthy finish. (TF) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

Outer quote mark A standout for its refinement as well as its quietly complex expression of keen and careful champenization that gets it right in terms of explicit, lightly toasty autolysis while retaining an altogether surprising sense of freshness, this exemplary Brut bottling is as graceful as it is layered and insistently rich with a lovely marriage of age and youth. It is beautifully balanced and sports a textbook mousse of tiny, long-lasting bubbles, and its deft combination of elements both youthful and aged make for a memorable wine that is worth every penny of its asking price. As I poured the new release of Roederer Estate's 2012 L'Ermitage around the office two things were said time and time again..."I think this is the best domestic sparkling wine there is"...and..."this tastes like actual Champagne." We hold Champagne in very high regard here at K&L, I think it's the most adored category in store and there are very few sparklers from elsewhere that can compete qualitatively. That said, Roederer Estate's top L'Ermitage bottling is a perennial challenger that measures up very favorably to it's French cousins at a very reasonable price point. I once had lunch with Roederer Estate's winemaker Arnaud Weyrich (who worked for many years at Champagne Louis Roederer in Reims as Chief Technical Officer) who told me the same exacting methods and quality checks that are used for Cristal are applied when producing L'Ermitage. The very best parcels from the very best vintages, reserve wines dating back 10+ years, 5+ years of ageing on lees, extra time ageing on cork before release. This is the real deal and the wine truly speaks for itself. A luxurious toasty nose, brioche, Tarte Tatin, freshly zested citrus. Lovely weight and texture on the palate, fine bubbles, mouth-watering acidity and saline minerals. Long, long persistence on the finish, stays with you for many minutes. Wow.

Here’s the problem with iconic wines: you know they’re great, you recommend them to friends, and then over time they tend to get overlooked as trendier wines comes and go. Then you taste them again, and are shocked by how good it is. It was far better than you recalled, and suddenly you remember why this wine is the best in its class. Take, for instance, the 2012 Roederer Estate l’Ermitage. I recommend this domestic sparkling wine to customers all the time. Why? Because in my opinion, it is the most superior sparkling wine produced in California. Yet, when our buyer opened a bottle of this the other day, I had forgotten how stunning this bottle really is. Intense, focused it is a case-study in precision and power. Plenty of crisp citrus tones, fading to crystallized cherry on the finish. Impeccably balanced with bright and clear flavors.Unbelievable. A perfect reminder right before the holidays that domestic sparkling wines can stand up to some of the best wines out there, and a classic wine should never, never be taken for granted.

The beautifully elegant Roederer Estate l'Ermitage is one of the best sparklers California produces. Lovely crisp and fresh with a tiny touch of spice and exotic crisp pear fruit laced with just a note of tangerine peel. Dry, refined and complex - just what you would expect from the French house of Louis Roederer to produce in California
