"What is a sheep only millions of little bits of sheepness whirling around and doing intricate convolutions inside the sheep?"- Flann O'Brien, The Third Policeman. Ruminate upon those shaggy ruminants as we journey to New Zealand’s South Island, to Central Otago, a spectacularly isolated region of rugged landscapes and lovingly-tended vines, populated with not just sheep, but colorful, iconoclastic characters like winemaker Duncan Forsyth of Mount Edward. His expertly crafted, biodynamically-farmed Pinot Noir, sourced from a trifecta of superb vineyards displays both finesse and gravitas, owing to the addition of whole clusters during fermentation and judicious use of new oak. This is a true winemaker's wine of place, poise and purity.

This is an excellent Pinot Noir that is ready to drink now. It is bright and fresh with nice fruit flavors that are balanced and elegant. In a recent staff tasting it showed very well in the company of other first class New Zealand Pinot Noirs. Complex, soft and delicious, it will go well both alone and with food.

Another great release this season from Mount Edward. A generous cherry nose with Ludens cherry fruit and baking spices. Brighter, with more acidity and brighter cherries on the palate. Finishes richly with a spicy finish. Another great effort from this vintner.

Very likely the best ever version of this staple Pinot Noir from Mount Edward Winery. These guys were one of the first wineries in Central Otago and, with winemaker Duncan Forsyth at the helm, they are leading the pack of fine wine production from this unique growing region. This wine is made from a blend of vineyards as well as whole cluster techniques. Partial use of 25% whole bunch gives depth and weight to the wine, while some 100% whole bunch ferments go through carbonic maceration, conferring life and delicacy. The Muirkirk vineyard fruit provides a dark ripeness, while the Pisa Terrace fruit is lighter framed, and not as broad or rich. This wine is voluminous, though not big and tannic, and the use of only 15% new French Oak provides just the right compliment to the fruit.
