Elijah Craig K&L Exclusive Single Barrel #5181798 Bourbon 750ml (ships as a 1.5L)

SKU #1389356

The history of Elijah Craig is the history of Bourbon. Reverend Elijah Craig was a Baptist preacher and active character in 1800s Kentucky. He was an educator, road builder, land speculator, and built the first paper and wool mills in Georgetown, KY. But it was his gift as a distiller and entrepreneur that establishes his place in history as The Father of Bourbon. How did Elijah Craig become credited with pioneering the charring of the oak barrels used to age Bourbon? We’re actually not totally sure. A lot of the history is lost, and there are several versions of the story. One account tells of an accidental fire in Elijah’s mill, which charred the wooden barrels and changed the whiskey inside. Makes for a great story at your next Bourbon tasting, doesn’t it? Other accounts speak of Elijah storing his wares in former sugar barrels, and becoming impressed with how the charring of the barrels improved the flavor. The truth is, no one really knows how Elijah began charring his barrels, but once he figured it out, it’s easy to understand why he continued to develop the process and changed Bourbon making forever. Inside, the clear, unaged corn liquor becomes transformed into a bold amber liquid, with a distinctively smooth flavor that makes Bourbon what it is. We rarely get access to Heaven Hill single barrels, but when we do, we snap them up. We expect a lot of people to do the same, and this barrel will be gone in short order. 10 year old barrel from Warehouse JJ, Floor 5.

It was pretty sad a few years ago when Heaven Hill closed its doors to the single barrel program. It's finally returned and we're overjoyed. While they're still not offering us cask strength (COME ON GUYS!), they are giving us incredible access to ultra high quality casks at aged above the 10 year mark. This out of control little barrel reminds me of the old Elijah 12 year. The nose is absolutely perfect. Big powerful notes of cigar box, sweet tea, bold oak spice and clove. The palate a lovely soft texture and seems to be going very sweet at first before drying up and kicking out a big spice and black tea note. It finishes dry but not tannic. Bourbon can still deliver for under $30 in a way that no other category can match. What a steal…

Elijah Craig has been one of my go-to sippers since I started down my bourbon path. How excited was I when I found out we were getting our own single barrel version of this delicious juice?! It’s like the small batch started hitting the gym and then decided to do some juicing of its own. If you find yourself constantly on the hunt for the prestigious barrel proof with the black label, this is an excellent alternative at an even better price.

I think that Elijah Craig Bourbons are delicious, interesting and fun. It is always nice to see a single barrel selection because they have the positive elements of regular Elijah Craig but are a little different. This barrel has a beautiful sweet bourbon nose. In the mouth it is rich and full with a nice caramel notes. It is slightly more intense that the regular bottling (which is itself an excellent Bourbon).

The days of easy-to-find, affordable sipping bourbons seem to be largely behind us. There is such a steep drop off for most of what you find under thirty dollars that it seems safer to just bite the bullet and spend 25% more on average than what one hope to. Enter this Elijah Craig K&L Exclusive single barrel to prove me a bold-faced liar. An absolute joy to sip on, no part of this drinking experience feels downgraded for price. The nose is full of creamy caramel pudding, and the palate bolstered by a strong savory wood characteristics-- oak and maple. But the nose sticks with you in an obsessive way and each next sip is almost reflexive. Even after my glass is empty the rich aromas are abundant. Don't miss this steal of a deal!

The hallmark of this bourbon is the dark nose. It's full of tobacco, cedar, chocolate, salt and butterscotch. On the tongue it's incredibly easy drinking and perfectly sweet. The finish picks up a little cinnamon and nutmeg and leaves you feeling satisfied, yet thirsty for just another pour. It'll be gone before you know it.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
