2010 Los Autores "El Brujo" Gran Reserva Rioja

Los Autores is a new, specialty negociant label charged with finding some of the most exclusive, compelling, unusual and traditional bottlings of Rioja on the market. We are excited to bring these wines into the United States, with the help of our friend, partner, and long-time Rioja resident María Alvarez. Future editions of Los Autores will always be available in tiny quantities. For this 2nd edition bottling, made by Rioja legend Ezequiel "El Brujo" García, we have a timeless, traditionally styled, Gran Reserva wine: primarily Rioja Alta fruit from long-time contracted mature vineyards in top sites, fermented in tank, racked into seasoned barrels generally 8-10 years of age, where the wine stays for 36 months prior to blending, a long rest in tank and then ageing in bottle. 82% Tempranillo, 8% Mazuelo, 8% Garnacha, 2% Viura. Think somewhere between La Rioja Alta "Viña Arana" and Lopez de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" in aromatic and palate profile, though released just a little bit younger.

Here we have a classic example of Rioja. Beautiful aromatics of spices, raisins, dark berries, vanilla, with a touch of more lifted strawberries. It's beautiful, and I was quite surprised when I learned what the price was.

Senor Ezequiel Garcia, known for his talents at Cvne, aka “El Brujo”, did his magic again with this blend of 82% Tempranillo, 8% Mazuelo, 8% Garnacha, 2% Viura. With aging in seasoned barrels (8-10 years old) along with top quality grapes, you get a well-structured and a truly traditional style of Rioja. As with the 1st bottling, the late El Brujo had a hand in this 2nd bottling and it truly speaks to the winemakers well-known wine. Aromatic, dark fruited with hints of leather , cedar, cranberries - the wine itself is a magical potion. I could easily pair this with a nice grilled steak.

Los Autores is of course Spanish for "The Auteurs," and the idea behind this series of limited, top quality Riojas is to pay homage to some of the most talented creative minds in the region, in this case to none other than the legendary Ezequiel "El Brujo" Garcia. This is a selection of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and even a tiny portion of white Viura grapes (as was common back in the day), allowed to age in Ezequiel's hand picked barrels (which were almost always some of the oldest still in use at the winery, typically 8-10 years old) for over three years prior to additional ageing in bottle. The structured dark fruit, quiet intensity, balanced acidity and fine tannins speak to a wonderful 2010 vintage and to time tested practices in the cellar. Whether this classic will endure for as long as the Tondonias, Imperiales and 904's of the world is almost besides the point - though I suspect that it will - and the really cool thing about this collectible is the legacy and insider Rioja history that the wine conveys. Our "El Brujo" gran reserva Rioja bottling is undoubtedly one of the most special wines we have picked up as a direct import from Spain.

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
