2016 La Chablisienne Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre"

SKU #1388684 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark Somewhat surprisingly this is riper than the Vaulorent but maintains good aromatic freshness if a bit less Chablis character on the oak framed white orchard fruit and citrus scents. There is excellent richness to the generously proportioned and caressing medium weight flavors that possess a sleeker mouth feel on the quinine and bitter lemon-inflected finish where the only reproach is a hint of warmth. Classy juice and a very good 2016. *Outstanding* Inner quote mark (10/2018)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2016 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has a well defined, quite "punchy" bouquet with potent aromas of cooking apple, Conference pear and struck flint. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. This eschews that exotic tendency of the 2016 vintage to create a more linear, slightly more austere Montée de Tonnerre with a latent spiciness developing on the finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the BIVB Chablis tasting. (NM) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

90 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Suave, modern expression of the appellation with appealing tension, richness and structure; round and lemony with whisper of caramel and spice. Inner quote mark (6/2018)

90 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Handy weight and richness here. Smooth and creamy peaches, apples and pears with a gently nutty thread. The concentration is good. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark (8/2018)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre exhibits notes of fresh white peach, citrus oil and beeswax. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and blocky, with a layered mid-palate and succulent acids. (WK) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

The best 1er Cru vineyard in Chablis nestled right next to Grand Crus Les Clos & Blanchots the Montee de Tonnerre drinks like a Grand Cru Chablis at a fraction of the price. Gorgeous notes of white flowers, kumquats, sweet cream and sea breeze rise from the glass. The palate is loaded with zesty citrus notes nicely accentuated with Asian pear and spice along with zippy acidity and firm tannins.

Chablisienne's 1er Crus are some of the best buys for white wine in any given vintage, and the 2016 Montee de Tonnerre is no exception. Attractive aromatics of wet stone, crisp pear, and lemon zest give way to a palate that is fresh, superbly textured, and full of refreshing red apple and key lime. Bright acidity carries the finish. This is the kind of wine that will thrill anybody who has a soft spot for balanced, refined, and classic Chardonnay.

This here is a perfect example of a truly fine wine with an astonishingly low price point. This Premier Cru does see barrel time, which imparts sensuous texture but not the oak flavor, giving this more richness than a village level Chablis yet the wine remains bright and fresh. There are lovely layers of ripe apple, stone fruit and lemon, all wrapped up in a fantastic, flinty finish. Gorgeous.

Elegant and sophisticated example of the top 1er Cru vineyard in Chablis and an unbelievable value! With delicate acidity, gentle yet deep and rich in flavor texture, this Chablis is easy to drink and undeniably delicious! Orchard fruit and white flower aromas and flavors combined with fresh mineral notes create a beautiful wine experience!

La Chablisiènne has made a wonderfully gorgeous wine here! A great combination of classic Chablis with clear and pure orchard fruits and a more modern interpretation of the fruits being a little riper than you may normally find from Chablis. The palate has a very lively acidity that zips through everything, along with that slight flinty / chalky minerality that makes Chablis wines so unique and enjoyable.

La Chablisienne always offers amazing value and the 2016 MdT is no exception. Mid weight and just a touch modern, it still displays the classic crisp apple and ripe pear fruit with a wonderful flinty Chablis note and decent acidity. Lightly spiced on the end and offering an enticing texture there is much to love here.
