SKU #1388675 96 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark A blend of Grenache and Syrah that was brought up in a mix of clay tanks and 500-liter barrels, the 2017 Côtes du Roussillon Villages Compartir offers an awesome nose of black raspberries, crushed flowers, exotic spices, and earth, with just hints of subtle background oak. This full-bodied beauty has tons of charm, a layered, seamless texture, and enough structure to keep for upward of a decade. It’s just another brilliant wine from this great winemaker. Voluptuous, from the Latin 'voluptus. meaning 'full of pleasure, a word often given to qualities of a ripe Rubenesque nature, but in vinous parlance voluptuous translates as pure delectation of the fruit as unveiled in the glass, sensual. arresting, attractive and complete. As 'Compartir' means to share, this resplendent Roussillon blend is meant above all to be shared, nothing held back in the vineyard, the winemaking or the final bottle that finds its way to your table. A gorgeous, full-bodied union of perfectly ripe Grenache and Syrah, this seductive wine exudes floral notes of wildflowers and violets, red and black berries, wet earth and dark chocolate. In a word, voluptuous.

I love Grenache and a wine like this is exactly why. Effortless power and deliciously ripe fruit. Smooth, suave mouth-filing texture. Great Grenache like this can have both the exotic, lifted aromatics Pinot Noir, plus the power and density of Napa Cab without any need for patience. It's a pop and pour hedonistic experience and one that fans of rich, explosive wines will come back to time and time again.

The Grenache dominant aromatics rise as you swirl your glass. There are heady aromas of fresh berries, strawberries, and a field of dried herbs. Then the Syrah asserts itself with its dark and brooding character. Black cherries, blueberries and a touch of wet slate inform the taster that this is a rather serious wine. Though full bodied and rather powerful, there is still an understated charm and elegance. While I’m inclined to put a few bottles in my cellar, I’d still enjoy drinking this young with a healthy slab of beef or a rack of lamb.

Château de L’ou continues to set the bar on power reds from Roussillon. Full of incredibly deep, dark, at times nearly black fruit, there is a ton of richness to this wine. This wine with an incredible amount of force and power, encased in a thick, velvety exterior. What’s most unique is that despite the amped up level of fruit, there is a significant mineral portion somewhere between graphite and iron that gives it dimensionality and compelling character. Fans of richer, more modern-styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape take note: This will knock your socks off at ½ the price.

The nose of this wine is full of baking spices, crushed flowers, a dark berry compote, just wildly aromatic. On the palate the wine is very well balanced but feels ultra-plush, it’s a texture that says cold winter nights but here in San Francisco that could be a summer afternoon. I really want to use the word "hedonistic" for this wine, but I don’t want it to get mixed up with the Robert Parker meaning for the word--this wine is clean, focused and really vibrant….it’s just wearing a fur coat.

One of the great standouts in Severine Bourrier's, proprietor of Chateau de L'Ou, line-up had to be this Grenache dominant Roussillon blend - the Compartrir. She took me to the site in Maury and together we climbed up the hard scrabble hill of schist to survey the beauty below. The site alone says - "I may be difficult to work, but I grow exceptional grapes!" The winemaking though is pure Severine. It is at once opulent but with her deft hand she keeps the wine focused and in balance. The fruit delivers in waves but with no shortage of excitement. The finish is superbly long - long enough to endure a flight back to France so I can go visit her vineyards again and taste more of her incredible wines!

This wine is so cool!!! On the nose this wine showcases smoky, schisty, mocha and coffee bean aromas that are so sexy and savory and make my mouth water with delight. The palate is equally enticing with big juicy fruit and luscious tannins all underlined but great acidity bringing the wine into balance. This wine is just plain 'ol fun and should be drank just because for whatever occasion. Do it. You'll not be sorry.
