2016 Chateau de L'Ou "Infiniment" Côtes Catalanes Rouge (Elsewhere $30)

SKU #1388670 94 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 2016 Côtes Catalanes Infiniment De L'Ou (100% Syrah) spent 14 months in 300-liter barrels. It’s another concentrated yet elegant wine from this estate, offering loads of black and red raspberry fruits, spice, spring flowers, and earthy aromas and flavors. I love its purity of fruit, and it just glides across the palate with no sense of weight or heaviness. It’s drinking great today but will keep for 10-12 years. (11/2018)

K&L Notes

Séverine Bourrier came to winemaking through her own passion for the subject, not having the family history associated with so many winemakers. She studied oenology in school and worked in Bordeaux for a decade. After meeting her husband, they relocated to a property an hour outside of Perpignan in the Roussillon. They began restoring an old château and did some replanting, rechristening the estate L’Ou, which is Catalan for "egg." The property is in an oval-shaped valley that was used as a rest area by herd animals and likely the Knights Templar on their way to various crusades. The estate consists of three primary terroirs: the alluvial marl soils that make up the valley, and two higher-elevation sites, one made up of black schist and the other brown. Their key grape variety is Syrah but Séverine also grows the classic regional varieties like Grenache and Carignan. The "Infiniment" Côtes Catalanes comes from the marl and alluvial soils near the estate. Made from 100% Syrah, it has a powerful nose with copious, rich, ripe fruit and spice box aromas. On the palate it is refined, delivering its power in waves, so as not to overwhelm. Excellent now or for a few years in the cellar.

What a fabulous winter-weather cuddle-buddy! This is a great bottle of Syrah that plays to both sides of the aisle. Sophisticated, yet friendly and inviting. Concentrated, without being weighty or sluggish. Right out of the gate big, bold layers of warming black fruit and clove spice burst forth. The pepper and earth that linger through the finish, however, will keep the more old-world Syrah enthusiasts engaged. An all-around crowd-pleaser at a great price.

I was really impressed by this wine because it manages to balance so many elements simultaneously in perfect harmony. It has a full, encompassing mouthfeel, but a medium (not heavy) weight, mouthwatering acidity, juicy fruit, and just a touch of grip for balance. This is most definitely be added to my list for customers looking for a crowd-pleasing, interesting red this holiday season.

Coming from the more alluvial soils from Chateau de L'Ou's estate just outside of Perpignan, the Infiniment is one of the most deeply satisfying wines you may taste this year. The 2015 was a wonder and topped the charts as one of our best sellers and I would argue the 2016 is even better. The wine offers an exquisite nose of blackcurrants and blackberries with spices of nutmeg and toasted cardamom. This most expressive nose carries over to the palate with a saturated mouthfeel and supple sweet tannins. Where this improves on the stellar 2015 is in the balance. A little more backbone of acidity wraps this package neatly. This is Syrah made with passion that trounces many others for character, profile and accessibility for half the price of anything else in the category.

The Cotes Catalan is one of the more beautiful wine regions in France. The long rolling hills sit in the shadows of the mighty Pyrenees mountains that geographically split Spain from France in the west with the Mediterranean sea to the south east. The land here is created by the rise and fall of land masses. The resulting terroir is well suited for making profound wines at truly ridiculously low prices. Though this is pure Syrah, the wine strikes me as a blend of northern & southern Rhone wine. There’s plenty of fresh fruit, structure, and substance to make this a serious wine. But it’s sufficiently easy to drink making it something you can enjoy any night of the week.

Loaded with red fruit flavors and spice, this is an easy drinking, expressive, crowd pleasing Syrah from the Cotes Catalanes in the south of France. Wonderfully fragrant, the wine's fruit and structure seems to lean predominantly towards the front palate, with supple and carefully built tannins on the back end. So this is a wine to enjoy now and for the next 5-6 years, no need to stash these away for years in your cellar!

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
