Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2016 Chianti Colli Senesi (90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot) is a lean, mid-weight red wine that offers a simple yet highly fruit-driven bouquet. You get tones of dried cherry, raspberry, bitter almond and grilled herb. The wine offers freshness and a simple but also highly accessible delivery. This vintage feels tighter and more rigid compared to the warm 2015 edition. (ML) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Chianti Colli Senesi is laced with sweet tobacco, dried herbs, game, mint and sage. A typically rustic Chianti from the Colli Senesi, appellation, the 2016 will drink well for the next few years, maybe more. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Wild-berry, underbrush and blue-flower aromas waft out of the glass along with a whiff of mint. Made with 92% Sangiovese and 8% Merlot, the bright easy-drinking palate offers crushed cherry, dried herb and a white-pepper note set against lithe tannins. (KO) Inner quote mark (5/2019)

Fresh, bright, crunchy and acidity driven, this little delight of Italy for such an affordable price will make your Italian fiesta even more exciting. Cherry, chewy tannins and a medium but not flabby body. It is young but divine and delicious.

This is surprisingly structured for the price point but has a rich overlay of ripe cherry fruit and a clean and wonderfully dry finish. Another pure and delicious bargain to buy by the case and drink with pizza, pasta, burgers or any picnic fare.

The everyday value that is Farnetella is well established with our staff. This pure pleasure in a glass Chianti transcends its humble price point with aromas of fresh raspberry, red flowers and graphite pencil. It is way more complex than you would think for a wine well south of $15. Enjoy now and for a couple more years with your weeknight pasta dishes and favorite takeaway pizza place.

Fattoria di Felsina is one of the top producers of Chianti Classico and their's is one of our best selling wines. It's no surprise to us that the wines of Castello di Farnetella are met with the same enthusiasm as the property is owned by Felsina! Their Chianti Colli Senesi is mostly Sangiovese with a small amount of Merlot added to round it out. The 2016 is an ample wine with bold red fruit, bright acidity and a touch of rusticity from a fine layer of tannins. It's a very impressive Chianti especially at this price.

I think it’s fair to say that as far as my palate is concerned, I often struggle with the ruggedness and lack of polish I find in most Chanti. And at under $15? Forget about it. I’ll pass. But every once in a while you hit a wine that totally defies your expectations and makes you reconsider looking the other way when you pass them in the hall. The Farnetella Chianti Colli is that wine for me. In the scribbled tasting notes I have for this wine you’ll see “really charming”, “ super friendly”, and “totally delicious”. It’s got a great nose that made me immediately recall Rosso di Montalcino. On the palate, bright cherry fruit, strawberry for days, and brambly with nicely structured tannin. Up front and incredibly tasty, I think this actually blows up the under $15 Italian red category. I dare you not to like this wine.

A delicious and great value. There are dark red fruit flavors that are balanced out with a nice dry finish. There is a nice and smooth mouth feel. This will go great with pizza and pasta.

This is a charming expression of Tuscany; ripe cherry, a touch of floral lift, earth, and leather. It is medium bodied with generous fruit up front, that classic Sangiovese acid but it is not tart nor tannic. This is a house Red if there ever was one. What's for dinner?

This is a knockout Chianti for the price! Lovely nose of dried cherries, tobacco, red fruit, and subtle spice. It's quite fresh and juicy on the palate with a medium body and integrated tannins. Would go great with pizza or a burger.

Awesome, aromatic Chianti for $12!!! Toast with savory black cherry glaze with great freshness and succulent juiciness. This wine at this price-point is very well balanced and should be a proud display on anyone's table!

I read the reviews on this wine by the major critics and it’s almost as if they all tasted different wines. It happens frequently when wines are first released that they are a bit awkward and angular of simple and lack distinctive flavor but this wine is now coming into its’ own and it’s a blockbuster for the price. The nose gives you the sense of a bold, complex wine with lots of earth and leather, hints of ripe cherry and Tuscan brush. On the palate you see this is a bold wine, showing depth and a bit of tannic structure, the flavors show more savory than fruity but there’s a bit of cherry confiture lurking in the back palate. The finish is powerful, long and brings that the polished tannins the wine to a crescendo. Big words for a wine that’s this inexpensive but try and you’ll see what I mean.

If you want and everyday Sangiovese that's classic, elegant, and refined, this is about as good as it gets. Cool fresh strawberry and red cherry mingle with sage on a texturally refined and light-as-a-feather palate. The purity of the 2016 vintage shines through. It will be hard to resist pulling the corks here as it is about as versatile as it gets for the price.
