 From winemaker Andy Erickson, the 2016 Leviathan is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot aged in 25% new French oak. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with exuberant black cherries, black raspberries and blackcurrants with hints of pencil shavings, black pepper, tobacco and forest floor plus a waft of tapenade. Full, firm and grainy, with gorgeous mid-palate generosity and packed with layers of black fruit and savory sparks, it has a rock-solid frame of ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long. Approachable now yet structured to cellar, this seriously affordable, serious California blend should age 15-20 years or more. (94+)  (12/2018)

 The 2016 Red Wine is another fabulous wine from Andy Erickson's Leviathan label. Grilled herb, leather, licorice, smoke and tobacco build as the 2016 shows off its alluring personality. Inky and juicy, the 2016 is insanely delicious. If anything, it might be too serious for a wine that is meant to be enjoyed upon release! (AG)  (12/2018)

Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Red Hills AVA in Lake County and Moon Mountain AVA in Sonoma. Syrah is from Nimble Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. This amazing red blend is brought to you by the former winemaker of Screaming Eagle, Andy Erickson. The blend is made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc from some of the best vineyards in Northern California. I get notes of black cherry, currant, dark chocolate and on the finish I get some spicy and toasty tannins. This wine will never disappoint!

For anyone who loves red blends, the Leviathan is the most consistent, high quality, knock-it-out-of-the-park wine in the store. I first discovered this wine back in 2006, and was gobsmacked at the level of rich, bold fruit that this wine delivers. It has continued to perform well every year since, but the 2016 was a particular stand out. Ripe notes of black cherry, blackberry, and mocha along with hints of smoke and spice, this is one of those wines that you can’t stop drinking. A head-turning wine that stands out from the crowd at its price point, it’s definitely earned its high praise.

The ultimate crowd pleaser! This is a wine that is purpose built for those with hedonistic vinous tendencies. In other words, it's for you folks out there that just can't get enough rich luscious fruit, exotic oak spices, ripe silky textures and mouth filling flavor. A bold, powerful blend of top notch fruit from across northern California. All of this is then seamlessly woven together by iconic winemaker Andy Erikson who has crafted cult wines such as Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Staglin, Dalla Valle, and Ovid. In 2004 Andy founded Leviathan with the idea of making a truly unrestrained California Red. The founding idea remains true to this day: One Blend - One Focus - Leviathan.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
