One thousand feet above sea level on an iron-rich volcanic flank of the Mayacamas Mountains sits the famous Monte Rosso vineyard, first planted in the 1880s. Italian immigrant Louis M. bought it (undoubtedly for a song) in 1938, at the close of Prohibition. Today some of the Cabernet blocks are 50 years old. Made by winemaker Michael Eddy, the wine is reminiscent of a great steak, with a juicy, meaty luscious middle. Supple layers of dark cherries, minerals, and savory notes of wild mountain bay laurel add dimension. Very long, with aliveness and vivacity. (KM) (10/2019)
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 28 months in new French oak (75%) and new American oak (19%), the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Rosso Vineyard sings of blackberry pie, crème de cassis, fried herbs and cast iron pan with touches of tilled soil and dried lavender. Full and concentrated, with firm yet velvety tannins, it delivers mouth-filling black fruit preserves flavors and a long, mineral-laced finish. 1,200 cases produced. (LPB) (1/2019)
