2016 Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné "Maison Bleue" Hermitage

SKU #1383700 94-95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is a juicy and flavorful young wine with dusty and polished tannins. Lots of wild fruit and dark-berry and volcanic/salt undertones. Flavorful finish. Inner quote mark (8/2018)

Outer quote mark Vivid purple. Expressive, smoke- and spice-accented dark fruit preserve, potpourri and incense scents are complemented by hints of licorice and olive paste. At once ripe and lively in the mouth, offering densely packed blackberry, blueberry and spicecake flavors that become spicier with aeration. Sneaky tannins give shape and solid grip to an impressively long, energetic finish that features lingering suggestions of candied flowers and dark berries. (JR) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Hermitage La Maison Bleue (2,000 cases) comes from vines on the eastern side of the appellation and more sedimentary and limestone soils. This deep ruby/purple-colored beauty gives up loads of black raspberry, toasted spiced, incense, and crushed rock aromatics. This flows to a ripe, sexy, medium to full-bodied Hermitage that has moderate tannins, a layered, beautifully pure, elegant, even charming texture, and a great finish. It's already approachable yet will have 10-15 years of prime drinking. Inner quote mark (12/2018)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The charming, already drinkable 2016 Hermitage La Maison Bleue comes from the eastern portion of the appellation. Raspberries and cherries lead the way in this full-bodied, velvety, lush offering, picking up subtle hints of baking spices on the long, silky finish. (JC) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2016 vintage of La Maison Bleu from Caroline Frey at Paul Jaboulet Aîné is an outstanding example of young Hermitage. This bottling is a touch less ripe than the La Chapelle 2016, coming in at even fourteen percent alcohol and offering up a superb young nose of cassis, black raspberries, pepper, a fine base of stony soil, cigar smoke, black olive, roasted venison and a bit of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a fine core of fruit, firm, buried tannins and excellent length and grip on the youthful and very promising finish. The La Maison Bleu is not as powerful or structured as La Chapelle, but it is a proper Hermitage and the 2016 will want at least eight to ten years in the cellar before broaching. It will age long and gracefully. Fine juice. (Drink between 2028-2065) Inner quote mark (9/2020)

90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This has a sleek and fresh feel, with red currant and raspberry coulis notes melding with light violet, cedar and tobacco accents on the finish. A cedar twinge peeks through at the end, leaving a slightly grainy impression. Drink now through 2029. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Medicinal notes on the nose, dark chocolate and bitter cherry fruit, all bound up by high, drying tannin on the palate. Packed with flavour, and needs plenty of time to soften and develop complexity. Dense, impressive, monumental. 17.5/20 points. (RH) Inner quote mark (10/2017)
