Hanzell is one of the most iconic estates in all of California with an undisputed reputation for producing some of the most exquisite and age worthy Pinot Noir in the USA. This hilltop patchwork of vines overlooking down town Sonoma is home to some of the oldest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plantings in the region dating back to 1953! Hanzell's history was cemented in California wine lore by longtime winemaker, Bob Sessions. Sessions made the wines for 28 years until his passing in 2014. The de Brye family, who have owned the property since 1975, then brought on current President & Director of Winemaking, Jason Jardine. Jardine who established the renowned Rhys Vineyards, and oversaw the rejuvenation of Flowers Winery in recent years, came on board in 2014 and immediately set about converting Hanzell's 42 acres of vines over to organic, re-generative viticulture. The 2014 Pinot Noir is the first release to see Jason's influence and he seeks to capture this special terroir even more intricately. This wine created quite the buzz in the K&L office this week when opened for tasting. Hanzell has long been held in high regard by our staff who appreciate the elegant, complex, layered style of Pinot the estate is known for. The wine is drinking beautifully. Crimson rose petal, pristine wild red berries, dusty spices, leather, truffle, forest floor. Supremely elegant with a wonderful silky texture, refined tannins, vibrant acidity and such beautiful interplay between the purity of the fruit and depth of savory, soil driven characters. This is a Pinot Noir to savor in a large Burgundy glass. It's just hitting its stride with six years in bottle, and will continue to provide prime drinking for another decade plus. We negotiated a special price, direct from the winery, on the remaining cases of the 2014 vintage, and are offering this wine at an unheard of price for this pedigreed bottling.
