This has layers of warm cherry, plum and raspberry compote forming the core, while apple wood, black tea and iron notes run underneath. The finish has a fresh and racy edge, leaving a mouthwatering feel despite the heft. (JM)

From a tiny section of this steep, granite terroir outside of Mauves (they have just a tiny 0.5-hectare parcel here), the 2016 Saint Joseph Lieu Dit Paradis has pure, clean, classic notes of black raspberries, cassis, crushed violets, and liquid minerality. Its vibrant, fresh, and focused on the palate, with terrific granite character in its texture and acid profile. 93+

Glass-staining ruby. Highly perfumed black and blue fruit, potpourri and incense aromas are complemented by hints of exotic spices and smoky minerals. Seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering densely packed, appealingly sweet blueberry, cherry preserve, floral pastille and fruitcake flavors firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Rich yet lively, finishing with impressive delineation, well-knit tannins and outstanding, floral-dominated persistence. Fermented in concrete tanks and raised in oak demi-muids, 15% of them new. Perhaps a bit closed down after bottling, the 2016 Saint Joseph Lieu-Dit Paradis seemed less effusive than when I tasted it last year. It's still a solid performer, concentrated and richly tannic, with mocha and cedar shadings over cherry fruit, but it lacks the drama of the 2015 and the forthcoming 2017. (JC)
