2017 Caravaglio "Occhio di Terra" Malvasia di Salina Bianco Secco Sicilia

SKU #1382906 93 points Wine & Spirits

Nino Caravaglio’s winery is on Salina, the central island of the volcanic Aeolian archipelago, just off Sicily’s northwestern coast. He inherited about five acres in 1989 and has built his estate’s vineyard holdings to almost 50 acres spread across several of the Aeolian islands, much of it planted to Malvasia delle Lipari, all of the vines organically farmed. Three of Caravaglio’s Malvasia wines are recommended here, including Occhio di Terra (“eye of the earth”), a selection of the ripest grapes grown in Salina’s sandy, rock-strewn volcanic soils. Caravaglio macerates it on the skins for ten days to coax out a deep gold color and flavors of orange marmalade, dried apricot and mango, the rich fruit tones balanced by intense salinity. As the wine sits in the glass, it takes on notes of ginger and dried thyme, eventually turning savory, with hints of saffron and turmeric. Pour this wine at cellar temperature alongside a plate of dried fruit, nuts and salty cheese, and allow several hours to contemplate the wine’s evolution. (6/2019)

K&L Notes

This wine is sourced from 20 small vineyards all over Salina, a volcanic island off the north coast. The nose is incredible. Full of a briny, salty, floral character, it’s spicy, inviting, and seems sweet...but no, the wine is bone dry! On the palate the wine has a supple richness, a weight that shows presence but not heaviness or fat. It begs for a plate of spaghetti con vongole (clams).

Salina is one of the lesser known islands near Sicily formed by volcanic activity where grape cultivation has transpired for over five hundred years. Antonio Caravaglio produces both red and white wines and this Malvasia is truly special. It is crafted in the style of orange wines as it spends ten days on the skins and is finished in stainless steel tanks. "Occhio di Terra" is Antonio's old vines cuvee made almost entirely from Malvasia and a step up from his highly impressive "Salina". Deep golden in color, it boasts intriguing floral aromas along with whiffs of minerals and sea breeze. The palate is round, spicy and complex with lasting flavors and saline on the finish. A wonderful partner for seafood and vegetable dishes.
