 Once again this estate revealed its excellent quality/price ratio. As one taster so appropriately stated after learning the identity of both the 1989 and 1990 Sociando-Mallets, "I'd rather have the '89 or '90 Sociando-Mallet than the '89 Margaux or '90 Mouton in my cellar." Both wines showed surprisingly well, performing at second or third-growth levels. The 1990 appears to be the finest Sociando-Mallet since the sensational 1982. The wine possesses an opaque purple color, and a tight but promising nose of thick, cassis, blackcurrant fruit, subtle roasted herbs, smoke, licorice, and minerals. (RP)  (2/1997)

 Ruby red to the rim. Vibrant, slightly high-toned aromas of mulberries, licorice, and spice, with a faint note of leather that contributes to its complexity. Very ripe and concentrated; quite dense but the velvety texture is already inviting. Finishes very long, with ripe tannins. The best young Sociando we've yet tasted; for this cru bourgeois, quite stylish. (ST)  (11/1993)

 Harvest date 13 Sep-2 Oct; yield 76.8 hl/ha; vineyard area 50.1 ha Deep crimson with more brilliance than the 1989. Firm, meaty and vibrant on the nose. Very luscious and hedonistic with more acidity than the 1989. This gives the impression of being far from its final flowering in the bottle. Dense and velvety with some of the property's freshness, it has a very long finish and is certainly flattering - though seems much more youthful than most 1990s. Clean and brisk on the finish. Just a few dusty tannins on the end. Thick! Long. 17+/20 Points (JR)  (9/2009)

92-94 points Neal Martin: "This is an outstanding 1990. The nose is very broody and backward with notes of melted dark chocolate, gravel and a hint of decaying leaves. The palate is very backward with a huge structure. Very tannic and majestic. Spicy, toasty finish. This wine is giving nothing away now, but there is a lovely bacon fat finish. Delicious. From 2012. Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the M├ędoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.


- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
