High West "Double Rye" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel #4968 Cask Strength Rye Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1381872

Another stupendous exclusive from High West as finally arrived. This special blend of rye whisky (the typical Double Barrel blend) was married and recasked into ex-bourbon barrels for an additional 3 years before being bottled at Cask Strength. The additional age has added depth and weight to the already wonderful Double Rye character and shows more tension and spice than the standard offering as well. There's tons of texture thanks to the high proof and additional concentration. We're really starting to move toward at old rye flavors here, so expect dense savory spice, sweet peppermint candy, hints of dill and mint with a deep caramelized vanilla behind the whole thing. These casks are always sleepers, usually customers don't jump on them right away, but we always get repeat purchases on the High West exclusives because they offer such a unique and delicious drinking experience. I expect nothing less from this awesome little cask.

This cask strength bottling of High West's Double Rye is another great addition to K&L's lineup of single barrel offerings. The nose-tickling aromas present orange marmalade, cherry, cinnamon, cayenne, and vanilla cream. The barrel oak is more present on the palate which also adds soft notes of char and some tannic qualities in addition to a slightly oily texture. Adding a few drops of water brings out more of a floral character to the rye with even more vanilla and oak.

High West has a long track record of producing high quality and creative products. This single barrel of Double Rye is no exception to this history. It is full bodied with nice sweet top notes that lead to dryer spice flavors. With a little water it becomes more soft with the flavors integrated and delicious.

After visiting their distillery in Park City, Utah in 2010, I became a big fan of High West. The facilities were clean and the employees knowledgeable and personable, and for whatever reason, I always liked their bottle designs. Vanity aside, the detail that grabbed my attention the most is High West’s transparency of what is going into their bottles. This Double Rye is a blend of two, straight, rye whiskies (one older and one younger) with differing mashbills that were then aged for an additional three years in used bourbon barrels. Bottled at cask strength, this batch gives off aromas of fruity esters reminiscent of strawberry flavored Mambas and lemon verbena paired with cream soda and dry hay. On the palate a mellow cayenne hits the tip of your tongue and rolls into cedar wood, cinnamon sugar, cola nut, and sweet anise. The finish is long and unapologetic, giving off tropical fruit notes and a sensation on the tongue not unlike lidocaine. This is undoubtedly the best batch of the Double Rye that I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying (and a pretty good-looking bottle might I add).

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
