Wathen’s Private Barrel #3597 "K&L Exclusive" Single Barrel Straight Kentucky Bourbon (750ml)

SKU #1380669

Here's another stupendous cask from our friends at Wathen's. If you don't already know, Wathen's (bottled by father and son team Charles & Sam Medley) is one of the country's most well respected non-distillery producers. We refer to them as non-distillery producer rather than non-distiller producer because of course Charles Medley is one of Kentucky's most well respected distillers. He had decades of experience running the old Owensboro plant, before moving toward contract production. That means he's got a special relationship with his contracted producers. He gets to call the shots, use proprietary yeast, dial in his specifications for fermentation, distillation and barreling. Other NDPs, even those buying contracts rather than bulk, likely rely on the expertise of their distilling partner to determine these important specifications. The Medleys do it themselves. The result is something that is uniquely Medley and always delicious. We selected this wonderful cask with Sam last time he was in town and it fits right into the distillers classic style, but with a subtle twist. Here the classic corn driven sweetness remains at the base, but a subtle minty spice creeps in with every sip. Tons of dried fruit and roasty vanillas to balance the growing herbaceous quality. As is typical a cask that fits the Medley's goal of offering exceptional balance and value for their customers. We're VERY happy to be one of the lucky few who get this stuff.

Aromas of peanut brittle, cloves and caramel lead into rich, malty flavors of toasted pine and citrus peels. For under forty bucks it's a versatile libation that you can enjoy neat, with a rock, or blend into a cocktail. I'm not sure what this one proofed out at, but it has the chops to take on a rock or two without falling apart.

This single barrel bourbon is packed with personality. Walnut, hazelnut, and wood spice greet the nose, while the palate takes a dramatic, fruit-driven turn. Valencia orange, banana, and crystallized lemon all make an appearance and are joined by notes of spice box, vanilla bean, and nutmeg. Its smooth approach is followed by a body-warming blast of heat, but never too over-powering. This very well could be my favorite Wathen's to date, and there have been some pretty spectacular bottles over the years. A true bargain for what you get in the bottle.

Who likes Banana's Foster? Well my friends, it is right here in the amazing, single barrel from Wathens! Dark brown sugar, toffee, walnut, and cinnamon, permeate my glass. One sip drives a penetrating fire of spice, malt and vanilla, with a lingering finish of mint and toasted oak. This is the perfect campfire bottle.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
