1996 Bowmore 22 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1380517

Independent casks of Bowmore are the best. Flat out, there is no other distillery's whisky that offers so much more in single casks than in the modern distillery bottlings. If you have only tasted Bowmore's offical 12, 15, and 18 year old bottlings, while they're perfectly tasty, you owe it to yourself to indulge in the hedonistic magic of pure, unadulterated, Bowmore. While the Morrison era of the distillery beginning in the 1960's is known for some of the most legendary whiskies in history, the glory hasn't come to an end. The purity, intensity, and wide range of flavors in this single refill hogshead cask demonstrate how compelling Bowmore can be. Bottled at 53.9% this bottling is an amalgam of sweet smoke, fragrant florals, herbaceous peppers, and tons and tons of fruit.

Smelling this dram pulled up an image of a smoked pork shoulder studded with pineapple rings, resting on a bed of spearmint. I’m pretty sure some unintentional noises were made as I sit at my desk, nosing the glass. Had someone been sitting on the other side of the partition, someone could have mistaken that questionable material might’ve been playing on my computer had there not been the sound of keys clacking on the keyboard, particularly when I tasted it. Bright, fruity notes swirled together with a light smoke, reminding me of smoked apples with honeysuckle. The finish was lush and left me with a feeling of euphoria. Great out of the bottle or hit it with a splash of water or an ice cube, a must taste for the Islay loving crowd (and even the ones on the fence).

Yup, another cask of Bowmore. I'm constantly astounded by the complexity and affordability of this exceptional distillery. I honestly can't believe they let go of these exceptional stocks. What's even crazier is that we're able to sell this whisky, a full two years older than last years excellent barrel, for the exact same price. Normally we expect a nominal increase each year as a function of age. For a blue chip distillery like Bowmore that can mean as much as $5-10 per year. But, some times things just work out. This gorgeous cask is going easily satisfy even the most picky lover of Islay whisky. Smoldering smoke, freshly tanned leather, pungent lemony sea spray. Shockingly tropical on the palate after the powerfully smoked nose. Building diesel and campfire smoke flavors round out the sweet citrusy finish. A real treat by any measure.

One of the best experiences I've had at any distillery was at Bowmore this last May. I had a glass of cask strength Bowmore in my glass, screaming of peat smoke, when we walked into the kiln while it was drying malt. Surrounded by peat smoke inside and out I nosed my glass and magic struck. Suddenly the entire world stopped and flavors that were previously undetected skyrocketed to the surface. That wide world of Bowmore I first experienced in their kiln exists in full in this bottling. The fruitiness is amazing. There are peaches, pears, dried apples, a touch of fig. An herbaceous quality that was entirely new to me in Bowmore until that day is readily apparent here. Green peppercorn, jalapenos, and mint all bounce around the palate. The smoke is sweet, well integrated, decidedly present, but not overwhelming. Salt and bacon fat mix into tobacco, wood tannin, sweet baking spices and supple leather. All of that flavor carries the cask strength alcohol with ease. It's soft, complex, and endlessly engaging. While I certainly can't spend $100,000 to taste the legendary 1966, I can drop the $150 bucks to capture some of the magic that is undoubtedly there.

The nose begins with a mixture of fresh green chilies and candied jalapenos followed by some wonderful vanilla and fruity notes underwriting the peat all accompanied by bright menthol. The palate begins with a whip of spice right from the lips and coating the entire mouth with the vanillas and fruit flavors eventually rising back up. The long finish gently settles back down into spice and ash from a campfire on the beach.

It's a cold Pacific Ocean night on the beach in Fort Bragg with a bonfire roasting sausages with jalapeño garnish and mango salsa. It's a beautiful thing.

Generally speaking, I love the effect extended time in barrel has on peaty Islay whiskies, so I was happy to test out this 22-year-old expression of Bowmore from Hunter Laing. The nose is stunning, but takes a moment to dissect. At first, the peat is strong, but after a couple whiffs, the balance and integration become apparent with notes of apricots, bananas, honey, herbs, and caramel with embers of peat smoke burning off in the distance. This is my whisky of the holiday season!
