2016 Fess Parker "The Big Easy" Santa Barbara County Red Blend

SKU #1380119 95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2016 The Big Easy is fabulous. Rich, powerful and flamboyant to its core the Big Easy hits the palate with tremendous fruit intensity. Super-ripe red cherry, raspberry jam, white chocolate, vanillin and new American oak shape this opulent Syrah/Petite Sirah/ Grenache blend. Winemaker Blair Fox has dialed in a style that captures all the exuberance of past editions, but with more nuance than the Big Easy has ever shown. And I say that as someone who has never loved this wine. The 2016 is simply outrageously delicious. (AG) Inner quote mark (9/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2016 The Big Easy checks in as a blend of 57% Syrah, 31% Petite Sirah, and 12% Grenache brought up in French and American oak (61% new). It's always an uber-ripe, pleasure-bent effort and the 2016 is no exception, although it has a beautiful weightlessness and elegance about it as well. Blackcurrants, camphor, scorched earth, licorice, and spice notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, delicious red that packs ample fruit and texture. Don't age it, drink it. Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark Dark and brooding aromas of peppercorn-crusted beef steak, teriyaki, blueberry and wood smoke make for a savory entry to this bottling. Intense blueberry, charred meat and cherry-wood flavors show on the palate, which is framed by firm mouthcoating tannins. It's a great barbecue wine. (MK) Inner quote mark (2/2019)

K&L Notes

A rich and decadent blend of 57% Syrah, 31% Petite Sirah, 12% Grenache. Fruit comes from Rodney’s Vineyard (70%) and Camp Four Vineyard (30%) both located in the Santa Ynez Valley. With The Big Easy we wanted to pay homage to one of our favorite cities, a culinary mecca and great supporters of our wines, New Orleans. This well-structured blend has the same characteristics you have come to expect from The Big Easy, rich dark fruit flavors with a touch of oak, and soft tannins that lead to a long lengthy finish. In the glass the wine is opaque purple in color. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, plum, boysenberry, vanilla, baking spices, smoked chocolate, anise. Flavors of blueberry, blackberry, dark chocolate, plum, smoked meat, vanilla. Aged 16 months in 61% new French & American oak."

The Big Easy just screams Central Coast Rhone! It has big, juicy, ripe fruit characters that are inviting and great to have around for the holiday season. Notes of blackberries, raspberry liquor, chocolate and vanilla are shown on the nose as well as on the palate. The finish is nice and smooth with moderate tannin and acidity. If you love bold, juicy wines, the Big Easy is your bottle!

This one is new to me, but a fun under-the-radar find from an often-overlooked producer. Inky dark to the core with deep aromas of asphalt, dark chocolate, and black currant, the palate follows with hedonistic rich deep red fruit, licorice, and vanilla. Although the flavors are deep, the finish is clean and fresh with just enough acidity and structure to support it. This is a fun, crowd-pleasing wine that will find a lot of quick friends, and one that will drink well right out of the gates.

The Big Easy is just that! - A big, juicy, fruit filled wine that coats the mouth and finishes smooth and easy. For me the Syrah here really shines in this wine. The flavors of blueberry pie, cream and spice just jump into the mouth. This is an pretty intense wine for the money but shows zero harsh edges. Just delicious!

The nose of this wine is dense, ripe Syrah fruit that rolls out of the glass. On the palate the sweet density is obvious and the tannins are polished and fine while exhibiting touches of vanilla and spice. The finish fills up the middle of your palate expanding in a wide, broad expanding richness. If you're having spicy BBQ'ed ribs this could be your go to wine!
