2016 Best's "Bin No.1" Shiraz Great Western Victoria

SKU #1375926 94 points James Suckling

Very attractive white peppers and baking spices with a wealth of red-plum, mulberry and dark-raspberry aromas. The palate adds dark peach-like fruit to the mix, which is also present on the nose. Plums, cassis and cherries abound. Really saturated and velvety. Drink or hold. Screw cap. (8/2018)

If opening the 2016 Great Western Shiraz Bin No 1 anytime soon, I'd recommend giving it a quick decanting, as it comes out of the bottle quite funky. It'll come around quickly, if my bottle was anything to judge by, revealing raspberry, cola and black olive notes, along with ground spices like cinnamon, clove and star anise. It's a medium to full-bodied, fairly structured Shiraz, with mouthwatering acids and firm tannins. Ideally, give it a couple of years in the cellar. (JC) (6/2018)

Deep, bright purple/red colour, an impressive appearance. The wine is clean and bright and the bouquet has dark plum and toasty oak well-melded. There is a lingering touch of bitterness in the black tea-like tannins. A full-bodied and fairly straightforward shiraz, with some earthy notes to its dark plum flavours. Lots of tannin and structure for a wine of its station. (HH) (3/2018)

91 points James Halliday

Fermented with 5% whole bunches in a mix of Potter fermenters and open vats, 6-10 days on skins, matured for 12 months in French oak (5% new). Full crimson-purple; a graceful medium-bodied Shiraz, an entry point wine into an exceptional portfolio. Cherry and blackberry fruits flow evenly across the palate, the tannins fine and not seeking to bar entry. (2/2018)

K&L Notes

93 points Wine Front. Winemaker's notes: "Bin 1 is a classic, cool climate, aromatic Shiraz, made in a style that is perfumed, spicy and peppery, yet well balanced with no overt dominance of alcohol. It’s a great match with food - particularly dishes like spring lamb. Lifted aromas of exotic spices, red plums, black jubes and black olives with some nutty notes in the background. Palate Juicy dark red fruit flavours fill the mouth. The rich and ripe medium bodied texture is drawn out with powdery tannins for a long savoury finish."
