2016 Rafael Palacios "Louro" Godello Valdeorras

 I was blown away by the 2016 Louro, a Godello-based white with some 8% Treixadura from their own vineyards. It is from plants averaging 25 years of age panted at some 600 meters on sandy granite soils in the parish of O Bolo. It fermented in 3,000-liter French oak foudres with indigenous yeasts where it matured in contact with the fine lees for four months. (LG)  (8/2017)

Jancis Robinson

 Made from small parcels of Godello from organic vines with an average age of 25 years, grown on sandy and granitic soils at an elevation of 600 m in the O Bolo municipality. The juice is fermented in 35-hl foudres made from French oak from Normandy forests and the wine is aged for four months on the fine lees before bottling. Very fine and racy and noble. Great balance and evidence of the nobility of Godello. Lip-smacking. Long. 17/20 points. (JR)  (5/2018)

Luis Gutiérrez in Wine Advocate: "I found the wines to be very pure, serious and a little closed and reticent, as they took time to open up in the glass and evolve very slowly. They seem to have gained precision in the last few years, and they reckon it's through viticulture, working organically and removing all the chemicals that had been used in the vineyards before they took them over. They have not really reduced the amount of oak, but it feels much better integrated. They have also been able to reduce the amount of sulfur used on the vines. This is one of the best white wine-only projects in Spain."

While our group was tasting this vintage of Louro, we attempted to categorize Godello by comparing it to other, more familiar grapes. Chardonnay shares its variability, the firmer weight, and its tendency toward orchard fruit flavors. Albariño shares some of its acidity and minerality. The aromas can be reminiscent of Chenin Blanc. But ultimately, Godello is its own masterpiece of a varietal, and this is a wonderful way to experience it. Crisp, tart apple, a touch of pineapple, and refreshing mineral texture make this a delight to drink. The oak doesn't feel heavy or overbearing; instead, it frames the fruit, giving it structure and a savory counterpoint. The last vintage of this felt a bit overripe and flabby, but the 2016 is taut with vibrant, mouthwatering acidity. This is a perfect summer wine, with or without food. Sit down, relax, and sip at your leisure.

A gorgeous Godello with a small amount of Treixadura. It boasts tones of lemon and quince with a stunning smoky minerality.

I love Godello for its natural ability to convey sense of place. This wine is full of sandy, granitic minerality and an almost saline element. Its crystaline acidity is very refreshing but the wine has a lovely textural softness on the palate. Super versatile with food and equally quaffable without. What a dynamite little wine this is.

The wines from the Valdeorras have enchanted me since the first time I was first introduced to them. How could I not? It is in the name of the appellation, valley of the ores! I know that is incorrect, it is the “valley of gold”, but how can you not want to drink a white wine that comes from the “valley of ores”? Especially if you already love the mineral-rich whites of Europe. How evocative is that? And then give me a new varietal, Godello, my younger self was trapped. Now that was longer ago than I care to admit but I still am entranced by the wines from the “valley of ores”. Now there are even more fissures and crevasses for me to mine in this very old, originally planted by the Romans, relatively new, varietals, producers , wine making techniques and most importantly a deeper knowledge of the vineyards and those varietals. Now we can get past that long-winded intro we get to this wine. A blend of Godello and a little Treixadura, another exciting local varietal, grown in granitic sandy soils. That is what this corner of Spain is all about, relatively high elevation, stony, mineral (remember this is the valley of ores) soils. What Rafael brings to these wines is texture. They are fermented and aged in French oak foudres. These wines see oak but you do not smell or taste it, it is just there soften and round of the edges. He brings his whites with their heavy but not too heavy Galician accent of bright fruit, fresh acidity and pronounce minerality and translates them into Burgundian French which is so much easy for most wine drinkers to understand. Not just any Burgundian accent, think Chablis. This is a wine for almost any occasion, seafood, poultry white meat, but sticking to the Galicia and Chablis thing, mariscos is the call.

Much like Italy, Spain prides itself on having several unique indigenous varietals. One of the most substantial and interesting whites is Godello, and few producers have a better handle on this grape than Rafael Palacios. The Louro bottling is fresh and round with hints of stone fruits that reminds a bit of Chenin Blanc. The wines is fermented in large oak casks which help the wine with complexity without adding oak to a wine that does not need it. I strongly recommend you try a bottle in order to grown your appreciation for the great white wines of Spain.
