2016 Allram Grüner Veltliner "Renner 1ÖTW" Kamptal

SKU #1374098 97 points Decanter

Youthful, refined and layered nose of nutty characters, peaches, apricots, apples, pears and lime. The palate is well structured with crisp acidity, ripe yellow stone fruit, a salty minerality and excellent length. This is an altogether seriously good Grüner Veltliner with profound complexity and promise. Age in bottle will only add to its stature. *Platinum Award Decanter World Wine Awards 2018* (6/2018)

92 points James Suckling

A smoky nose (slight reduction) and a tightly-wound, sleek palate make this a long-term wine that will need some time to open up. Good depth and structure. A long and crisp finish. Better from 2018. (10/2017)

91 points Vinous

Pungently smoky, ashen notes and piquancy of lime zest that extend from nose to finish render this one of several vintage 2016 Grüner Veltliner that put me in mind of Furmint. But scents and flavors of apple, green bean and tarragon testify to the wine’s varietal origin while combining for a cooling, psychologically crunchy impression that nicely complements and tempers the zesty and smoky elements as well as the tropical suggestions of mango and Persian melon that emerge midpalate. There is a subtle sense of textural creaminess but also ample primary juiciness, which is maintained through a sustained, alkaline, smoky and ashen finish. This didn’t complete its primary fermentation until the end of March – extremely late for this estate – by which time a portion had undergone malolactic transformation. This is definitely a wine that will be intriguing to follow in bottle. (DS) (12/2018)

A little over a decade ago, Gruner Veltliner became the darling of the wine world. Suddenly, wine lists at the best restaurants were dominated by Gruners at the expense of richer and rounder Chardonnay’s. Though the overall consumer demand for Gruner never quite caught up with the intellectual enthusiasm, we did get exposed to an amazing array of wines. Gruners tend to be both racy and complex; with notes of lime, citrus, white pepper, and a touch of fresh herbs. The acidity in the wine is palate cleansing which makes it a perfect companion to richer foods, even the classic schnitzel. However, it will pair just as well with patés and salumi platters and fresh water fish preparations. This is a classically styled wine worthy of your attention.

Gruner Veltliner can often be ostracized for being too astringent, green and peppery. What I look for, however, are the examples that defy this stereotype with great balance and layered texture. This is just such a wine: on the entry it is crisp and driven by tropical fruits of papaya, mango, but with a linear mineral undertone. As the wine takes shape on the palate, you notice a pleasant round character that fills out the middle nicely and a great textural element to give it depth. It finishes smooth and crisp with lingering citrus. Very well done and quite worth your while!

I love the combination of well rounded texture of this Gruner and bold powerful mineral side of it! It creates wonderful, dens,e multi-layered flavor profile that is incredibly complex and intriguing. Dry, with lots of freshness, pomelo and grapefruit notes.

It's no wonder Gruner Veltliner is so en vogue right now with wines like this! Fresh and elegant with a nice, rounded palate balanced by a zippy little line of acidity. This has lovely notes of yellow stone fruits, spice and saline along with ripe green pears and winter citrus. If you're unfamiliar with the varietal, pick up a bottle of this Allram to really see the potential this wonderful grape has, and if you're already a fan, you're going to love this!

This is not your dad's Kamptal Grüner Veltliner. Which is to say, it is lush, ripe, and rounded from start to finish—not a single hard edge about it. Expressive yellow and stone fruit flavors dominate and are later joined by pleasant herbal touches and a hint of salinity. This 100% holds up to the big names out of Wachau (Pichler, Knoll, Prager) but with its own distinct Kamptal profile. Feel free to pop the cork now or cellar for another five to ten years. With this super-sharp price, I'd suggest picking up a few bottles—it's just that good!

Allram's 2016 Renner is an absolute rock star. It hits the palate with a crisp line of acidity yet possesses a certain roundness that allows for near-term enjoyment. Notes of Meyer lemons, Bosc pears, white pepper give way to a slightly minerally, and lengthy finish. Drink this lovely Gruner anytime over the coming ten to fifteen years.

Allram has become a household name at K&L thanks to the incredible value their 1L bottles of Gruner Veltliner represent on a yearly basis. The 2016 Allram Gruner Veltliner "Renner 1Otw" is a stunning wine and a huge step up qualitatively from their everyday offering. This wine is loaded with aromas of concentrated citrus notes, green fig and white flower aromas while the palate is a scintillating blend of orchard fruits, citrus and nut oil flavors. This is an impressive Gruner Veltliner that feels regal while not gouging your pocketbook.
Top Value! Drink from 2018 to 2028

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Gruner Veltliner

- Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, making up about a third of all the vineyard land in the country, according to importer extraordinaire Terry Thiese. The varietal has definitely increased in popularity of the past few years, as sommeliers and wine directors loaded their lists with this spicy white because it pairs well with so many things. Its bouquet has been described as floral, tending to toward musky, with hints of peppery greens, lentils, citrus and red fruit with a distinctive mineral quality. In the mouth the wine can be broad or precise, but is almost always distinguished by bracing acidity and flavors that mirror the nose. A notoriously good ager, you can drink GrüVes in their youth, or let them evolve in complexity in your cellar.
Country:

Austria

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure.
