2012 Franck Bonville "Pur Mesnil" Brut Blanc de Blancs Champagne

SKU #1373328 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This wine comes from Le Mesnil, one of the top villages in the Côte des Blancs, and is produced from only Grand Cru vineyards. It is as textured and mineral as a young wine like this should be. White fruit shows through the concentrated texture and will become more dominant as the wine matures. Outer quote mark Sourced from three vineyards in Mesnil (Les Zailleux, Le Tilleul and Les Hautes Mottes) that were picked on the same day (24th of September), Olivier Bonville's citrus colored 2012 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Pur Mesnil shows a deep, intense and chalky-mineral bouquet of crushed limestones intertwined with ripe, concentrated fruit aromas (most of all lemons) and delicate herbal (marjoram) and flint stone notes. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, dense, dry, salty, vibrantly fresh and persistently mineral Blanc de Blancs with remarkable purity on the long and lemon-fresh finish. The 2012 impressively reflects the complexity of the Mesnil terroir, and its precise, fine and mineral finish indicates excellent aging potential. There is stimulating grapefruit freshness and bitterness in the finish. (SR) 93+ Inner quote mark (8/2018)

When I tried these Champagnes with Olivier Bonville in Champagne last March, I couldn’t wait for them to be available in our stores. Luckily, our intrepid buyer Gary was one step ahead of me and they arrived in California literally the same day I returned. Talk about a warm welcome! Part of a series of Champagnes produced from single village plots in the coveted Côte des Blancs area of Champagne, where Chardonnay reigns, these releases are an exercise in subtlety of terroir. Although these releases are a wine geek’s dream, they’re still accessible and elegant enough to serve at a party and make everyone happy. “Pur Mesnil” is - perhaps unsurprisingly - the raciest of the trio, with steely backbone, citrus fruit, saline notes, and incredible minerality. The chalkiness is extreme on the finish, and this baby will age for decades. This release sells out the fastest from our Hollywood store, and with good reason: it’s a gorgeous representation of an exceptional village.

More Grand Cru glory from Bonville, this Champagne begins with fresh brioche bread then moves to pear and yellow apple. There’s also great minerality with a flinty, slightly smoky aroma casually hanging out in the background. The palate has snappy acid with flavors of grapefruit and citrus pith, ending on a lightly floral potpourri.

Another in the “terroir-series” passion project of Olivier Bonville. The value on these single-vintage, single-varietal, single-village Blanc de blancs can’t be overstated. These were executed perfectly so that the terroir of each village is distinctly displayed in the wines. If you are looking to go down the Champagne terroir rabbit hole, this is a great place to start. “Mesnil” really showcases the kimmeridgian minerals alongside ripe, bright citrus and apple fruit with an intriguing line of saline, and great acidity from the stellar vintage.

Franck Bonville released three 2012 Grand Cru "Pur"series Blanc de Blancs based on where the vineyards are located in the Grand Cru village terroir of Le Mesnil. We were lucky to taste all three side by side and had the opportunity to distinguish how each are different based on the location of the vineyard. On the nose there are chalky and minerally aromatics followed by ripe stone fruit. Minerality, acid, zesty citrus and chalky limestone on the finish.

I'm still waiting to find that terrible bottle of Franck Bonville... Which I'm starting to believe is IMPOSSIBLE! The 2012 Pur Mesnil has definitely turned into my favorite bottle from this producer. It's a champagne that really showcases how versatile Chardonnay can be, and I love that. Coming from very chalky limestone, you can defintely taste that chalky minerality, and a slighty toastiness, and it's so good. If you want a unique blanc de blanc champagne, this is the bottle for you.

I call these the Trifecta of Champagne. Bonville has captured and bottled the Grand Cru village terroir of Le Mesnil, Oger et Avize. Le Mesnil is the elegant, chalky and citrus edged herbs. Then you move up to Oger where the citrus flavors have hints of savory yeast. The Avize is rounder and is more fruit forward. Whether you enjoy them one at a time or side by side, they are not to be missed.

WHAOH! Bright pear, green apple nose. Saline and razor sharp acidity on the palate. This wine has a wicked long finish and is very expressive of the Grand Cru vineyards in Mesnil for their squeaky clean body and longevity in bottle.

The cleanest, happiest of the Bonville amounts this village trio of Village offerings, this has got a great, lifting note of lemon peel and fresh basil that rockets out of the glass. A phenomenal candidate for aging, this will also be great with fatty foods here and now. I'm constantly blown away by this producer and this bottle keeps it going.

All Grand Cru Chardonnay, all stainless steel and bursting out of the glass with fervor the Pur Oger is a beautifully clean wine that shows off how wonderfully versatile chardonnay actually is! I get notes of melon, and vanilla on the nose with a hint of orange. The palate is bright and lively with notes of bitter orange, a slight waxiness, and wonderful white flowers. Bonville is always a great choice!

These three single-village champagnes from Franck Bonville are such fabulous examples of how expressive terroir can be. The "Mesnil" is a very impressive and unique cuvee-- unsurprising given that Mesnil-sur-Oger is inarguably one of the greatest chardonnay growing regions in all of champagne. The nose on this one is more restrained, with a very clean freshness, like the crisp smell of a snowy alpine morning. Then the fruit explodes onto the palate, expanding out to every corner-- powerful and direct. This shares the same lightly saline qualities as the "Avize" but here it comes across a bit more spicy, creating an exhilarating and long-lasting finish.

Franck Bonville is one of my favorite direct imports and a go to when I need a solid Champagne that wont break the bank. His new single site series focuses on producing Champagne from the best plots in each village. He produces using all Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes and vinifies in all stainless to maintain verve. The "Pur Mesnil" has a long, rich finish with vibrant minerality. On the nose is sweet fennel and orange, white flowers and spice with a limestone, chalky mineral note. Delicious!

Spoiler alert! This isn't arriving until late October of this year. I had a sample bottle today of this special, first-time release (with two other village designated releases) and it is not to be missed once it arrives. A low dosage of 4g/l does not necessarily make for any teeth chattering acidity! A honeysuckle and white stone fruit nose that is very pretty. Hints of cream, key lime and meringue. Super long finish! Very pretty texture and finesse. Super limited and perfect for those Champagne geeks of you out there. Also look for the "Pur Oger" and "Pur Avize", which are completely different.

The 2012 Franck Bonville "Pur Mesnil" was my personal favorite of the Terroir Series from the House. Crafted from 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay, this is everything I could want from a Champagne, especially at this price. The terroir of Mesnil is renowned for high belemnite (fossilized cuttlefish) content, which translates directly into this wine, which oozes saline minerality. The wine is quite dry, with a broad, creamy palate, and the finish lasts for minutes.
