2016 d'Arce, Côtes de Castillon

SKU #1372135 91 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Showing a beautiful limestone minerality and focus, the 2016 Château d'Arce offers a terrific perfume of savory red and black fruits, dried herbs, flowers, and loamy soil. With medium to full body, notable tannins, and terrific purity, it has rock solid depth and richness on the palate and is going to benefit from short term cellaring but keep for a decade. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

91 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Very pretty red already with plums and currants and salty and earthy undertones. Medium body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Inner quote mark (4/2019)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark This vineyard is located on the limestone plateau of the Cotes du Castillon. The 2016 Chateau d’Arce is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with vivacious black cherries, warm black plums and mulberries scents plus nuances of cassis, violets and bay leaves and a waft of crushed stones. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is charged with energy, giving black fruit and mineral layers with a firm, grainy backbone and lively lift to the finish. (LPB) 90+ Inner quote mark (3/2019)

90 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2016 d'Arce is a soft, floral Côtes de Castillon from Hélène Garcin and Patrice Lévêque. Soft, floral and fruity, with lovely red/purplish berry fruit, the 2016 will drink well upon release and for at least a handful of years thereafter. (AG) Inner quote mark (1/2019)

90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Fresh and pure, offering a tightly focused beam of raspberry coulis and cassis notes, with light anise and floral accents along the edges. A pretty mineral twinge adds cut on the finish. Not big, but very pure and nicely rendered. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2019)

K&L Notes

This is one of those bottles that you could easily pass up on the shelf, if you didn’t know who’s behind it. In fact, newer though it is, with the Garcin-Lévêque expertise driving this Château, it’s definitely one of the best values in the store. What do you need to know about the wine? This is a classic Right Bank blend—mostly Merlot with some Cabernet Franc. It’s a great example of 2016 finesse, without being overly ripe or unbalanced. It’s charming, vibrant and elegant with a good depth of fruit, and also subtly structured with fine-grain tannin and fresh acidity. It’s easy to drink right off the bat without having to cellar it for years. 90 points, Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2016 d’Arce, from the same owners as Barde-Haut and Clos l’Eglise, has a dense black cherry and iodine-scented bouquet, powerful but retaining good definition. The palate is grainy on the entry, displaying good density and fine acidity, and a little backward toward the finish, which offers good grip. Slightly rustic, but I mean that in a good way. Recommended, and a great value." (01/2019)

Another great chance to try the fantastic 2016 vintage. The d'Arce is a pleasing, juicy wine with elegant notes of coffee, cherries, plums, with very velvety tannins. Very versatile and completely drinkable from the get go.

This is only the third vintage of this wine and since we have carried all three I can safely say it has quickly become one of the most elegant wines of the Cotes de Castillon appellation, an area known more for richness than finesse. Although this has a slightly darker profile than other vintages it is still primarily red fruited with hints of spice and toast. This shows amazing poise and pedigree for an under $20 bottle and is delicious to drink right now. These wines keep getting better and better.

Classic 2016. Don't let the low price scare you away. This reminds me of the 1997 Cantemerle: it drinks great young, but will age (if you can keep your hands off it.) Wild spicy berry and floral character. Full-bodied, with soft tannins.

This is a wonderful, easy drinking Bordeaux wine. I found it juicy and savory. Juicy because it had ripe fruit held up by some good acid and the savory notes were like poaching that ripe fruit in warm spices and herbs. What a treat at this price.

In the middle of a substantial line-up of Bordeaux, the ’16 d’Arche was a stand out for many of the staff. I had to double check my tasting sheet for the price. $20 is a wonderfully low tariff to pay for a wine of such quality. This is the kind of wine that’s going to win over an entirely new generation of fans to Bordeaux. The wine possesses good structure (consisting of 90% Merlot) but it’s still accessible enough to drink now. The 10% Cabernet Franc lends a helping hand adding a secondary level of aromatic complexity and flavor beyond the gorgeous primary red berry fruit from the Merlot. I strongly recommend this wine.

From the smaller but important Côtes de Castillon, Hélène Garcin-Lévêque and family bring us an elegant, straight-forward and delicious wine. Made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, this wine showcases wonderful ripe dark fruit notes with hints of mocha and coffee. This wine is incredibly approachable with it's soft tannins and fresh acidity and is sure to please at all times of the year.

Much as I loved the 2015 vintage of this wine, the 2016 is even better! A little more classically structured, with more restrained red fruit on the palate, this wine is a gorgeous example of the quality that Chateau d'Arce maintains, despite the inexpensive pricing. I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a great Bordeaux in the $20 range.

This is an outstanding standout among our early 2016 red Bordeaux. It has rich raspberry and dark cherry fruits with licorice, a hint of toast and serious structure from the tannins and acid…it is displaying the balance and finesse of the ’16 vintage very well.
