2014 Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1371858 91 points Decanter

Outer quote mark This vintage has expansive layered aromas featuring floral notes and herbs like sage and mint, while flavours turn toward the more savoury, olivey, dark earth and tobacco side. Though the wine isn't dense or especially concentrated, it has a lovely supple, smooth texture. It’s lighter in character, fresher and lower in alcohol than 2015. (EM) Inner quote mark (9/2019)

K&L Notes

Silver Oak Cellars is a Californian producer known for its wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon. It was founded to focus on that grape variety in 1972 by entrepreneur Raymond Twomey Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer. Winery note: "Our 2014 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has a garnet color with a ruby red rim and bluish tint. It has an alluring nose of chocolate-covered strawberries, vanilla, nutmeg, truffle and sage. On the palate, it has a broad yet delicate entry and offers cranberry flavors. These flavors are complimented by raspberry and pluot flavors and savory black olive characters on the mid-palate. The wine finishes with silky tannins, cedar and bramble flavors with excellent length and return. Given proper cellaring conditions, this wine will be deliciously drinkable through 2038."

It's no secret that most staff members at K&L tend to lean towards Alexander Valley Silver Oak over the infamous Napa Valley Silver Oak, and it's not necessarily because we think one is better than the other, both are fantastic in their own right, but if you want a cab that leans heavily more towards a Left Bank Bordeaux style coming from California, then the Alexander Valley is your go to. The 2014 finishes bold, yet packed with silky tannic structure, which makes this bottle a rather easy drinker. With Cabernet dominating about 97% of the juice in this bottle, I will the 2014 Silver Oak is a fine expression of what Alexander Valley cab is capable of being, and definitely a fantastic wine to either drink or give for this holiday season.
