The exceptional Savanna distillery has been notably unavailable on the American market despite accolades from across the rest of the world. The small distillery on the Island of Réunion is probably one of the most exciting things you can't get in this country. It's unique in that it's operated similar to the Agricole distilleries of the Caribbean, but distills rhums from both fresh cane and molasses. In this case the rhum was distilled from molasses supplied by the Bois-Rouge refinery on the island, so it's truly an exercise in rhum terroir. The rhum is distilled in an alembic column still like an Agricole Rhum and aged in the chai on site for 12 years in used ex-Cognac barrels. Marc was lucky to get the keys to the warehouse and selected this special lot of barrels for his new line of spirits. This is the first rum from Réunion that we've ever sold and hopefully not the last.

It is a rare day when we get to try Rum from Savanna Distillery in the US. Bapt & Clem's have done a fantastic job sourcing and aging this little beauty. the nose is full of ginger and baking spices, green grass and herbs, and if you let it linger for a moment you get hints of caramel. the palate is bright and dry, beautifully spiced with just a hint of sweet vanilla and caramel before fading into an even and dry finish. This is the perfect gift for any rum drinker!

It's painful learning about this historic distillery and the many transcendent products they put out as I drink through my first and likely my last little sample of Savanna's inimitable talent. This is some magical rum-- more like a sugarcane-based bourbon than any rum I have ever tasted. It is by pure coincidence though that the island used to be called "Île Bourbon--" for its integral role in the early Vanilla trade (the island is a bit south of Madagascar). There is serious complexity on display here, and phenomenal integration of the natural sweetness of the spirit and the savory influences of the barrel. The marriage of exotic agricole rum and ex-cognac barrels creates a spirit that embodies a hot summer night-- energetic, wild, perfumed with richly grassy notes, sweet on the front with a wonderfully dry finish.

Well this is a funky little number. Hailing from a tiny volcanic island off of Madagascar, Savanna Distillery makes several styles of rum and is one of the few producers in the world that uses both raw can sugar and molasses depending on the flavor profile they're looking for in their spirits. The distillery is primarily known for bold agricole style rums, and they make spirits that are anything but typical. So even if you are a rum aficionado, this is one to check out and alter perceptions. This rum is herbaceous and downright medicinal. I pick up aromas of grass, wildflowers, and forest floor rancio amidst more astringent notes of Bandaid-like phenols (heads up to all the folks that like iodine-smelling Islay Scotches!). Digging through these scents, I finally get some caramel tones along with electric red Maraschino cherries and subtle hints of more tropical fruits. The flavors here are uncompromising and it's one of the driest rums I've ever had the pleasure of running across. Not for the faint of heart, this rum is as tasty as it is perplexing. It'll keep you scratching your head and reaching for another glass.

A stunning amber/topaz in color you might be forgiven for thinking this was Cognac at first blush. The dark color, candied fruit, and ethereal nose of cigar box and dried petals scream Cognac. The palate is all spicy and rich molasses based rum. Aged in 3-5year old ex-Cognac barrels, this makes perfect sense. The young and flashy fruit of the Cognac had just enough time to permeate the barrel and has really left its mark on the Savanna distillate. The hot and humid aging has brought everything together in one seamless package. Pure elegance and finesse. The best of Cognac and rum, all in one.
