2017 Bodegas Colomé Torrontes Valle Calchaquí Salta

SKU #1366706 93 points Decanter

A benchmark Torrontés with an intense, perfumed nose followed by a balanced palate that's full of concentrated ripe fruit and freshness. Zesty notes of grapefruit are apparent, combining with subtle floral hints and crisp citric acidity to create a very fine example, which emphasises how special Calchaquí is for this variety. Full of citrus and peach this is a delicious wine that has stacks of fruit. Very fresh acidity and no sharp edges. Mineral finish. Drink now. (4/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The serious 2017 Torrontés is varietal, fresh, intense and a little grapey. It has a soft palate and finishes with some sweet Moscatel pulp fruit flavors. (LG) (6/2018)

Vinous

Bright, light yellow. Sexy rose petal lift to the aromas of fresh apricot, nutmeg and ginger. Round, fat and savory on entry; quite dry but with plenty of body for the variety. Still rather wound-up in the middle palate, though, conveying very good intensity to its saline flavors of stone fruits, anise and tarragon. Finishes dry-verging-on-austere, but this wine nonetheless boasts more body than the 2016 version. (ST) (7/2018)

K&L Notes

From biodynamically farmed Torrontes, this wine is produced from some of the highest elevation vines in production anywhere in the world, at more than 7,000 feet above sea level! Very floral aromas with juicy yellow plums and white peaches lead to a lovely, slightly spicy and floral, yet refreshing palate. Another great effort from one of our favorite Argentinian wineries.

I'm a sucker for Torrontes. The aromatic lift and intense jasmine and tropical tones sing loud and proud. It is a wine that makes a wonderful aperitif and the region of Salta is the best provider. This high altitude lends better acid tension to help balance the panoply of floral and fruit tones that emerge. Fear not, though, this is a dry expression and wants nothing more than to be paired with some fresh farm cheeses or corn and chicken stuffed empanadas.

Here is an amazing value for under $10.00. This is filled with crushed peach and juicy apricot flavors along with roasted tarragon, other savory herbs and a green flecked flinty, Chablis-like character. A mouth-filling, palate cleansing and just crushable bottle to buy by the case.

This might just be the single most complex white wine in the store for under $10. You’re immediately greeted by the charming aromatics Torrontes is so well known for. Peaches, apricots, and a touch of honey emit from the glass. The wine is clean and pure on the palate with stone fruits taking center stage. I really enjoyed the texture of the wine which offers a light grip reminiscent of peach skin. The wine tastes like a much more expensive white wine from Alsace.

Beautiful aromatics tell you right away you're drinking Torrontes and this is one of the nicest I've had. Very elegant wine, medium bodied but still has very good weight yet shows some snappy mineral/acidity on the palate. Very refreshing and a perfect grilled seafood wine for the summer.

What more could you want for the perfect Summer white wine than what is contained in this bottle? It has a great, highly-aromatic nose that is fresh and slightly saline. The high elevation of the vineyard brings acidity and brightness. This would make a great accompaniment to fish and fresh veggies.

While torrontes will always have a distinctive, pronounced floral quality, it is the Colomé to me which is always the most balanced, focused and interesting expression, with a nose of yellow plums and tarragon, just a hint of a rose water quality as well, which then leads to a fresh and refreshing palate, dry as it always is, but with a well defined mineral aspect as well. This is just a beautiful summer aperitive - for fans of aromatic whites it does not get any better for the price!

Perhaps there is no other wine that will pair as fantastically with Seviche (or crab cakes really...) as this Torrontes from Valle Calchaqui. Its aromatics are perfumed with intense white flowers, honey and bright citrous, but with its dry finish and high acidity, it achieves a perfect balance. Very nice wine indeed.

Country:

Argentina

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
