2017 Pavie-Decesse, St-Emilion (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1365164 98 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Coming from a vineyard just above Chateau Pavie, the 2017 Chateau Pavie Decesse is a brilliant blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up all in new oak. It reveals a dense purple/plum color as well as stunning notes of creme de cassis, caramelized black cherries, graphite, crushed rocks, and candied violets. Deep, massively concentrated and powerful, yet with considerable elegance, fine tannins, and outstanding length, it’s a magical wine. Give it 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 20-30 years. Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Outer quote mark There was no frost in the vineyard in 2017, due to its elevation. This is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, and 100% of the grapes come from the limestone plateau. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Pavie Decesse bursts from the glass with bold notes of crushed black cherries, baked plums and boysenberries plus wafts of licorice, smoked meats and cracked black pepper with a hint of tree bark. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers wonderfully concentrated, crunchy black fruits and racy acidity to balance with firm, ripe, rounded tannins and a very long, very minerally finish. Outer quote mark This is laden with cassis and warmed plum compote notes, infused liberally with violet and anise accents. Gains depth and richness with air, yet maintains a racy edge due to its mouthwatering acidity and perfectly embedded chalky spine on the finish. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

96 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is a very long wine with lots of currant, mushroom, tobacco and bark character. It delivers a full-bodied palate impression with lots of ripe, silky tannins, yet they are always reserved and beautiful. Needs three or four years to open. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

96 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Pavie-Decesse is dark, sensual and so alluring. Inky dark fruit, gravel, spice, licorice and incense all flesh out in a deep, beautifully resonant Saint-Émilion that hits all the right notes. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural breadth so well. This is another absolutely stellar wine from the Perse family. (AG) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

93-95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This wine is structured and concentrated, with powerful dark fruits and a strong mineral texture. It is rich but firm, dominated by a dry core. The ripe fruit will come through later. Drink from 2025. (RV) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

Outer quote mark From 3ha located just below La Mondotte on the higher part of the plateau, there was no frost at this estate (although they managed to select it down to 14hl/ha), and it's showing extremely well. This is a big wine, and there's no question that those shoulders are ripe for carrying - a linear conductor of minerality. It's silky and persistent, with plenty of punch to the liquorice and dark chocolate. Those low yields come from careful selection, and I would have loved to taste this with just slightly higher yields and a touch more juice, but that's quibbling. No second wine here. K&L Notes

93 points Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2017 Pavie-Decesse, which was bottled in July 2019, offers copious black cherries and boysenberry fruit on the nose. Fine delineation here, very pure with floral notes (violet and peony) developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, gentle grip with impressive focus towards the finish. It will need a few years in bottle to lose its sinew, but this appears to have obtained more balance since I tasted it from barrel." (02/2020)
