94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Opaque violet. Highly perfumed red and dark berry, exotic spice, incense, violet and smoky bacon aromas show outstanding clarity and pick up hints of black tea and licorice with air. Deeply concentrated, mineral-accented red and blue fruit preserve and bitter cherry flavors are complemented by a hint of candied flowers on the back half. Broad and chewy in texture, showing noteworthy tension and finishing with strong, floral- and mineral-dominated persistence and youthful tannins that lend solid final grip. This wine is sourced from two small, west-facing sites abutting the Hermitage hill and shares the same soils as the famed Hermitage lieu-dit Les Bessards. In most vintages, Like 2017, it can easily rival many an Hermitage for depth, power and complexity, not to mention age-worthiness. (JR) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Super fresh, purple and blue fruit here with attractive, spicy complexity; herbs and pepper abound. The palate has a deeply structured array of ripe-berry, meaty and cedary flavors and delivers a long, flinty finish. Inner quote mark (6/2019)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Rich, concentrated and tannic, the 2017 Crozes Hermitage les Varonniers comes from a parcel of vines grown on the same granite in Hermitage as les Bessards, but it has a west-facing aspect. Dark plum and crushed-stone notes pick up hints of cassis and cedar shavings in this full-bodied, muscular red. (JC) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Stylish up front, with pepper, violet and tobacco notes leading off, followed by a core of gently mulled cherry and blackberry fruit flavors. A late echo of bay leaf gives this a pleasantly rustic tilt at the end. Shows good range and character. (JM) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

91 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Deeply coloured. Pronounced vanilla and dark chocolate on the nose, almost malty, with a touch of prune. Full bodied, with ample mouth-coating fine tannins, slightly furry in texture. This vintage borders on over-extraction but manages to retain a sense of freshness, with just enough lightness of touch to give it drinkability. Made from over 60-year-old Syrah vines planted on a southwest-facing granite slope on the border of Hermitage, lieu-dit Varogne. Completely destemmed, then fermented in concrete then matured for 18 months, 70% in tank, 30% in demi-muid, of which 20% is new oak. (MW) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Black fruit with a touch of liquorice and tar on the palate. Furry tannin leading to a lovely violet tone on the length. Plenty of concentration and purity, and lovely herbal notes to finish. Formidable fruit power on the persistence. (RH) 17/20 Inner quote mark (4/2018)
