 Attractive deep black raspberry and blackcurrant fruit are pure and impressively dense in the dark ruby/purple-colored 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon. It tastes like a hybrid example of Bordeaux with the ripeness and purity of Northern California fruit. The wine has attractive aromatics, beautiful body and excellent balance. K&L Notes

Robert Goyette got his start with the founding of La Crema winery back in 1979, and after selling it in the mid-1980s has continued making wine under many more labels. This is old-style Sonoma Cabernet at its finest: pure fruit, classic structure and just the right kiss of oak. Being a few years from its release date, the wine is in top form. You’ve all heard praise for the 2013 vintage in Napa and Sonoma, and it’s great to see how these wines are developing. This Cabernet is loaded with dark cassis fruit and pretty red berry notes, but also displays a lovely savory character with brings into play a hint of tobacco, forest floor and clove. The finish is quite long, and the wine still has a good hearty structure that ensures its ability to continue to age gracefully.

You may know that at K&L we have a bit of a bias towards Bordeaux when it comes to Cabernet, but when Clyde and I tasted this wine together, I saw the expression on his face. It was unmistakable. When someone like Clyde, who has tasted Bordeaux professionally for decades, is this excited about a Cabernet, you know you’ve struck gold.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
