2017 Fefiñanes Albariño Rias Baixas

SKU #1362089 93 points Wine & Spirits

This is the flagship of Palacio de Fefiñanes, first produced in 1928. The grapes are from Cambados, and the wine spends six months in stainless-steel tanks until it's bottled. A classic albariño from Rías Baixas, this is a lovely mix of peach flavors, scents of flowers and herbs and a mineral background. It is soft, round, juicy and rich in its lime-scented acidity. For batter-fried calamari. (8/2018)

Wine Spectator

Apple, ginger and herbal flavors mingle in this round white. Citrusy acidity and a light spritz keep this lively. Juicy and fresh. Drink now. (TM, Web only-2018)

K&L Notes

Luis Gutierrez writes: "The Bodega del Palacio de Fefiñanes is one of the eldest producers in Albariño, as they date from 1904. They are located in the palace in the main square of Cambados, which can be considered the heart of the Rías Baixas appellation. They registered the brand Albariño de Fefiñanes as early as 1928. Their wines are good when released, but I like them even better on their second, third and even fourth year. Very reliable."

Today being April 1st I am tempted in trickster fashion to play fast with the truth and make some far-fetched claim about a talked up wine I’ve yet to try, but that would be highly unethical, so I’ll stay within the real and give a bunch of vine-ripened kudos to one of my favorites from Rias Baixas in Galicia, the 2017 Fefinanes Albariño, certainly one of the purest, most emblematic versions from that stunning part of the world. Classic unoaked aromas of citrus blossom, melon, sea spray and lime zest mingle with crisp, lightly spritzy flavors of grapefruit, nectarine, apple and wet stone. Paired with grilled scallops or a delicately spicy chicken curry…. only a fool could resist!
