2014 Ramey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1361218 93 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is classic Ramey Cabernet all the way. Blackberries, currants, scorched earth, and charcoal aromatics, medium to full body, great elegance, and notable concentration all make for a top notch 2014 that can be drunk today or cellared for 10-15 years. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 6% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot, and it’s made in decent enough quantities that it should be easy to find. (6/2018)

The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is just as appealing today as it was last year. Supple, open-knit and expressive, the 2014 will drink well with minimal cellaring. Floral and savory notes add an attractive upper register in this mid-weight, juicy 2014. Bright red stone fruit, plum and savory notes abound on the finish. This is a gorgeous Napa Valley Cabernet from David Ramey that shows just how appealing 2014 can be. (AG) (3/2017)

Plenty of currant and berry character follows through to a full body, round tannins and a juicy finish. Dry and delicious. Lovely balance and drinkability to this. Drink now. (5/2017)

91 points Decanter

A rich bouquet of creamy cassis, cedar, spice and truffle introduces a full-bodied, powerful palate framed by fine, savoury tannins and finishing with good persistence. (WK) (5/2017)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up notions of cassis, warm plums and cedar chest with touches of tobacco, dried herbs and underbrush. The palate is medium to full-bodied with plenty of ripe, juicy black fruits and savory accents framed by grainy tannins and background freshness, finishing on an earthy note. (LPB) (6/2018)

Jancis Robinson

After an understated nose there’s loads of lovely blackcurrant, smoke, charcoal and gamey aromas on the palate. Almost more like rhône than bordeaux in its meatiness. Long, malty chocolate finish. Very soft tannins and great length. Perhaps not the most typical Napa Cabernet from its relatively restrained fruit, but delivers satisfying complexity and persistence. David Ramey is a legend in Napa Valley and throughout the wine world. Antonio Galloni has said, “In my mind, Ramey is one of the top wineries in the United States.” This is a Bordeaux-style blend that checks all the boxes. Rich, earthy and impeccably balanced, this is a unanimous staff favorite.

If I had to choose my favorite steak wine right now, I would have to say it is Ramey's Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Soft, ripe, and packed with silky tannins, the Ramey delivers on so many levels and at a very fair price point, considering all the fruit is Napa fruit. David Ramey is a fantastic winemaker, and this bottle showcases his talents.

I attended a seminar hosted by David and Carla Ramey a few months ago. It was an eye-opening talk about wine and the process of making it and he really inspired me to revisit everything I thought I knew about winemaking in California. David's engaging demeanor and sincere approach to his craft is clearly reflected in this bottle. Complex and filled with personality, rich yet elegant, this is exquisitely balanced and will cellar well for many years.

Another stellar release from this Napa Valley stalwart; Ramey's 2014 Napa Cabernet is yet again an immaculate rendition of what makes this valley so special for growing Cabernet. Packed with deep, brooding, smokey dark fruit; plum, cassis, dried herbs, graphite, embers and cedar shavings. Full bodied but dry and nicely structured around well defined tannins. Nice purity of fruit with a nod back to a time of more classically styled wines; it shows a lovely combination of ripe fruit and generous texture without becoming jammy or over the top. At our special hidden price this is a Napa Valley classic you don't want to miss!
